Why Do You Celebrate?

Christmas is just another glorified day of consumerism. Well I know see it that as an adult, but I doubt back in 1976, when i was 3 yrs old.. that i believed in the Fat ol red guy, that I knew what commercialization is, but one day when I was with my wife, coming back home from visiting my rents, when2005 / 2006.. and I was gassing up my car to come home on Dec24, that we saw a business like kinda dress, in a suit, and it was Santa in his Clark Kent getup... he winked with a twinkle in his eye at my fiance... and I was gassing up.. he pulled out.. and waved goodbye as he got into his car and said Merry Christmas....

We both looked at each other... rather stunned.... knowing it really wasn't Santa, but I'm telling you it was such a magical moment.. and the same time we both looked at each other and said...
" Wow He really does exist!!"

No Word of a lie... I was much in shock as I looked up too and he winked at me too... What special night that was....

I find Christmas is a lot like birthdays.

Just like how as soon as your parents stop throwing you amazing birthday parties where you and your friends all go to Chuck-E-Cheese or Ruckers and have pizza and pop until you drop and play games and then get like 100 presents, birthdays kinda lose that flair, Christmas kinda lost its magical flair as soon as we were told that Santa Claus is in fact not real.

I still have a little bit of the Christmas spirit-- I still enjoy a little extra time with my family, and admire the decorations. I still watch all those old Christmas specials.

Underneath all of the commercialism you can still find a lot of the real Christmas to celebrate. Everyone takes this time to make amends with family and spend more time with friends and family, and Christian families still celebrate it as the birth of Jesus.

I celebrate because I like to be out of school. Getting a month or so off between classes is a nice break.

I also celebrate because it's tradition. Maybe that's not the best reason, but isn't it the main reason for most holidays nowadays?

It's also a good excuse to spend time with the folks.

It's also a good excuse for presents! Who doesn't love a present now and then? Giving presents is fun for me too. I love to shop and it makes me happy to find things that I think my friends and family will like.

Also, Christmas cookies. Need I say more?

For me its like this.. takes time to spend quality time with loved ones and refresh. And if I can get extra time once a yearto do just that... you can be sure I will take advantage!

Yay he knows it's about culture. Pretty much what I have said for a year on these forums now. I almost respect this guy for not being a dumbass.

Anyways, I only celebrate it cause my mom likes it and that's what you do when you're respectful. I have always felt that these halmark holidays were insincere and didn't mean ***. Sort of like how valentine's day isn't romantic; it is cliche beyond belief.

I love Christmas, its a day for coming together with the people you love. If your pissed off or disenfranchised don't blame the holiday or the icons, blame your own damn self. Its easy to hide the shame of your own meaningless existence behind a shroud of cynicism, but its your lack of belief in even the simple pleasures in life that make you unhappy. Quit pissing on people just because they choose to accept the goodness you disdain.

I stopped liking Christmas as much after I got a job.
But now that I'm older I like giving presents as well :/

not that this hasn't already been ripped to shreds aplenty, but you act as this one negative thing is in a vacuum the ONLY effect Christmas has. Let's ignore all the lives saved as people in the "Christmas spirit" reach into their pockets and give to provide food, water, clothing, shelter, etc all over the world.
What's more, although no news outlet is completely without bias, you shouldn't trust ones who's bias is too damned obvious. I mean really how was this occasion to take a shot at Milton Friedman? They really had to reach for that one and in so doing their agenda became obvious.

I didn't work retail but I did work in grocery when I was 15/16.
