It's derived from the Greek "Androdes" meaning "As a man, manly". So you can definitely say it takes on masculine characteristics, but the modern term android is for a machine that appears to be human, "man" being used in the unisex fashion. I'll decline to give my alma mater here, except to say that it's a small liberal arts college none of you have ever heard of (for good reason). I started as a chemistry student, changed to math, then math+computer science. I ended up with math+cs majors, with enough random classes for minors in chemistry, physics, and philosophy. That chemistry knowledge actually got me a job working for a scientific equipment company as a programmer. (lab equipment! testing it was fun)
