666 is the value of the Greek letters which spell "Nero Caesar," or some other variant of his name (I can't remember which one off the top of my head). He was the pioneer of finding creative ways to torture and execute Christians in the First Century.
The Christians were afraid to speak critically of Caesar in their writings, so they used the code to refer to him because it could be interpreted in many ways.
