got my ebisu rod when fishing hit 78 and I'm wondering should I save gp to get my fishing apron next or pick up the emblem for the stall first I'm down to 9k gp since I picked up the rumors for the ebisu atm. currently 83 skill with neither the apron or the waders as the very first fish I gutted was a gugru that was given to me by a friend when I hit 30 and it had the sabre shoot so my gp priorities were slightly skewed
I would say go for stall because it's +5(?) fishing skill and only costs 20k versus 100k, but that's just me!

In the years I played ffxi I did some fishing every now and then but always got bored on long fishing runs. I however did quite enjoy fishing when I have a busy day studying and take occasionaly breaks to clear my mind for 30-60min.
Ive read some fishing guides and the conclusion across all of them is "get a lu shangs rod". I started the quest long ago but I will never get it done (<1.000/10.000 so far) because I do by far not fish often enough and not "hard enough".
lu shang being at 7m on bahamut is much easier farmed (7 dynamis sessions should still do the trick, even with declining currency values) than quested. However, for the occasional, casual fisher, 7m for a fishing rod is quite a lot.
Can you guys give me some advice, is it worth at all getting (buying) the lu shangs rod if I dont fish dedicated and regularly for hours? if I have the lu shangs rod, how much time would it take me to fish the 7m back?
and finally, I am currently lvl 21, what is the best spot/rod/bait for me to skillup? considering that I dont spend lenghty periods fishing but rather casually go there every now and then for shorter periods, Id prefer an area that isnt too far off (like the depths of SSG), 30min to get there to fish another 30min and warping again isnt fun really :S
edit:
I did read the post on this page that says how to make money but 200k a day (which involves several hours of fishing I assume) isnt that much money compared to the 7m needed for lu shangs or to the 1m you'd do in less time dyanmis farming
The whole point of Lu Shang's Fishing Rod is to be a gateway to getting a Ebisu Fishing Rod. Once you get that, you can sell back Lu Shang's.
So other than the GP item for cap to 110, what should I GP next? Signboard Im seeing? Other option was the smock to synergize, fishing up less items worth it? What KI are worth it, I am going to do Cave Cherax for the Dwarf Pugils(and skill to 110) to get Matsyas for Shapers Shawl, so would Mooching be best to go for next? Like that's my direct next task with fishing lol
Edit**
Tl;dr
Do I need Mooching for Matsyas, other than that Signboard thing or smock best for GP

maybe, no and nope.
Do you have issues with running out of time on legendary fish like Gugrusaurus or Lik? if so, then, yes you will need mooching for Matsya. if you dont have problems losing fish to time out, then you wont need mooching.
next GP purchase should be Fisher's Emblem, which is used to make Fisherman's Stall. i think thats probably what you meant by signboard thing =) if so, and you already have a stall, then go for waders or apron depending on how you value 1 skill vs a slight reduction in item bites.
Stall is the most potent GP upgrade available, by far, imo.
I tried getting skillups at level 21, went to talacca cove to fish for istavrit which happened to go awesomely smooth, only downside is not a single skillup came in. after 26+ fishes I abandoned it. followed a wiki guide and went into the SSG, halcyon rod, shrimp lure for nebimonites, what I got was catch nothing x3, then an item, then a monster (cancelled them both) and then a rod break on the first thing that should have been a fish. Guess that was the last time I tried fishing for this year lol maybe Ill give it another try next year
thanks i got a lot of help today and after i got my shoot sold off remaining 42 gugrus and made 2 other people able to share my victory
Ugh, when I finally got my saber shoot, the same thing happened to me. I had 30-40 gugrusaurus left over, and 2 people got their item from that batch. Zaldon has no lack of salt to rub into your wound.

Had the same problem with nebs hour of fishing in ssg got me 3 fish was following this guide
After buying and selling a lu shangs rod about 5-6 different times during all these years I am finally questing it manually with my 3 characters. 600 moats a day should make it relatively easy seeing that this is day 3 and the NPC counts about 2480 (I had some turned in previously apparently).
I am also doing GP everyday for serpent rumors and did the prerequisite for inside the belly so I can do ebisu soon. I've been 100 for awhile and I have the fishing stall already. About 30,000 points into the 95,000 needed at this moment. Not looking forward to spamming the 2 fish for the key items.
I've been skimming the thread for a bit and might have missed it, but the stall in my mog house gives a hidden+5 even without moghancement for fishing? Also does having 100 skill or beyond help with the break rate of the lushang or line?
I never looked hardcore into fishing until this point. I got my fisher's torque last night at least.

You need the megamoglification: Fishing from the stall to be dominant to get the +skill, you cant just put the stall in your house and get the skill if you have another element dominant.
For line snaps I think skill is a factor, rod breaks im not sure.
There are fishing topics that come up now and then but mainly are asking a question for a single answer. I know there are many fishers that visit these forums so this is an attempt to get people involved and have a little fun discussing one and only one thing, fishing!
The emotions of fishing.
I know Blue Gartr has a Fishing topic already, but I would like to see this community get involved a little bit and talk, since not everyone visits BG. I would love to have a topic just for fishers including veteran fishers, casual fishers, and even players just starting out and want to ask a few questions without being embarrassed about starting a whole topic for a simple answer they could not find.
I only ask that you keep any bot talk to a minimum, preferably none.[Moderator edit: No bot talk] I want this to be a place where we can discuss anything from GP items of the day to what lure/bait to use or what area is best. A quick mention of how you're doing on the lu shang/ebisu quest, how you're doing getting your fishing items from Grounds of Valor, that item you're saving your GP up for, or how much you wish you could hurt Zaldon for not finding anything in your fish for the 10,000th time. Your lucky moment streaks and the moments when you have nothing come your way and question why you started fishing in the first place. Anything that comes to mind, think of it as the random thoughts thread for fishing.
I will list a few resources that I find to be useful when it comes to fishing:
BG Fishing Topic Great Blue (Amazing Site <3, is out dated since 2008 but an amazing resource regardless) Final Fishing (Another great resource with one of the most in-depth guides made. Out of date though.)
Fish Size Chart [GE][Wikia] Chenon Diary (The site seems to be down for good though, it was a site made for Fish Ranking)
I shall add more if people provide good resources.
