I know Heart Gold and Soul Silver are remakes of the second gen, but how touched up are they in comparison to their original counterparts; especially Crystal?

They have the best functional touchscreen menu of the games so far.
Obvious graphical enhancements, the story has barely been touched.

They didn't remake crystal. I don't know what you mean by touched up though.

Played Diamond/Pearl? Done about in the same style. Their good, worth a buy.

I guess my only concern then is how much of it went changed, as far as core story, maps, gameplay, and available pokemon go.
They added some extra stuff to do for endgame but like I said, the story is exactly the same. Maps slightly more details, same Pokemon availability until postgame.
Guess maybe I'll DL an emulator and a third gen game to play at work when it's quiet then :P
Been looking for a cheap used HG\SS lately, but they seem to hold their value well >_>
Second gen is by far the best ones I've played.
They were everything red\green\blue\yellow were, just better.
And the fact that we could visit the old cities just blew my mind as a kid.
Only major gameplay difference is the physical/special split on types. Like instead of all water moves being special attacks, you have like waterfall is physical and surf is special. Available pokemon are the same, except where there are new evolutions like yanma > yanmega. And obviously new moves and stuff.

You'll notice a small change in how the rival is named, other than that I didnt see anything else.
In the originals, after you beat him the first time he's all like "I'm ???, imma be the best trainer!" and when you get back to Elm's Lab you're all like "Oh yeah his name was ....".
In these, after you beat him he runs off, but promptly comes back saying he dropped his trainer card. "Oh no, you saw my name!"
Available Pokemon are exactly the same. As well as the maps.
EDIT: 3-5 people answer the question I'm addressing as I'm typing up my post >.>
This is a thread that I found on another website I post at. It can be really really interesting. I thought it deserved a place here.
Post your random thoughts for the day here, or anything else that intrigues you.
For starters, is it possible to give constructive critism to someone who doesn't have a neck? I totally just walked by a girl who didn't. Someone isn't getting a necklace for Valentines day!
And who decided black and white can't be colors? I want to say a racist. I really do.
