While I'm on a roll with political links, Japan has become the largest financier of United States debt, after China sold off a good chunk of their treasuries last quarter.

-sighs- Bah. It's starting to feel like since we lack currency, we are being traded as such.

But oh man I feel so much better about it being Japan... even if we did beat them in WW2 making this borderline ironic.

So what does this mean, Jaerik, overall, will either Japan be in debt to USA, or will USA be in debt to Japan?

I'm worrying more about the CDN economy, not the US market.. but nonetheless, very curious.

It means the US is currently in debt to Japan by $768 billion.

What's interesting is that a lot of other countries are in debt with the US WAY back from WWII.

So, did like other countries take a chunk of our debt and pay it off hoping we're good for it on returning the amount?

It means the US is in debt to Japan in a sense. The US government issues bonds to fund its activities, and other countries buy this because its still a very secure investment (think of yourself putting your money in a savings account at a bank, then the bank uses that money for its operations, and also pays you interest).

The danger is, if many countries feel the government bond is not secure enough anymore, they'll all withdraw their money and bankrupt the government. How secure it is depends on the health of the country's economy in general and the deficits the government is carrying.

EDIT: a bit late posting I see lol.

Wow that is a huge debt... I just hope the government doesnt try to spend another Trillion dollars on something that is just going to keep people lazy instead of stipulating it for the actual needy..

I actually never understood this line. By land area, Japan is larger than every country in Europe except Ukraine. (In the 75th percentile world-wide.) It's the world's second largest economy, and has the 10th highest population.

Why do Americans always seem to think Japan is roughly the size of Rhode Island? Is it some weird compensation thing?

They don't have to "try and collect." All the US's debt-holders have to do is sell all their treasuries -- they don't need US approval to do so. You can't force them at gunpoint to hold on to them.

Of course, there's no reason for them to do so as long as they're making a boatload of money off financing our debt.

It's the same with Great Britain, I think. And I think Americans see Europe as a whole rather than individual countries forming a continent.
