I grew up in the 80's/early 90's, but was never much of a "hair rock" fan (was more into bands such as Dead Milkmen, Dead Kennedys, The Misfits) etc. However for whatever reason, I liked White Lion (Wait, When the Children Cry, Little Fighter).
They had one song in particular, Little Fighter. I always thought it was about
someone and wasn't just some power/rock ballad mix, but didn't really look into it until recently. Come to find out, the band was made of both Dutch and American nationals and they were quite the activists in their time. "Little Fighter" is actually about a Greenpeace boat,
The Rainbow Warrior. The boat was one of the first Greenpeace UK boats that would openly combat illegal whaling boats, nuclear testing by governments near islands populated with indigenous cultures and oil drills. The boat was finally targeted and actually destroyed by the French intelligent service (DGSE) in 1985 while docked in New Zealand after leading a flotilla of yachts protesting the French nuclear testing at the Mururoa Atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago of French Polynesia.
Honestly after reading all this then listening to the song again, I got a bit juiced up, not gonna lie.
