I don't even think most lawyers represent themselves for their own personal legal issues. I can't imagine how someone without real legal experience thought they'd stand a chance against a company like Nintendo.
In June of this year, Nintendo filed additional lawsuits in U.S. courts to further intensify the crackdown. One of these complaints targets Modded Hardware and its alleged operator, Michigan-resident Ryan Daly, who’s also known under the alias “Homebrew Homie”.
Nintendo and Daly were no strangers at the time. In March, Nintendo threatened Daly with a lawsuit; both parties agreed that the allegedly unlawful activity, which includes selling MIG devices and modded consoles, would stop.
That didn’t happen, however, so Nintendo sued Daly at a federal court in Seattle instead.

You're gonna lose the case, at best you hope for a slip up and a technicality, but chances of that are gonna be small. You're out $2m to Nintendo, why add legal fees for a losing case on top of it?
Would be like if I was gonna fight Mike Tyson. He's gonna obliterate my ***. Why would I go out and hire a team of personal trainers so I last 1 punch instead of without training, lasting... 1 punch

Probably should've stuck by that agreement.
lmao so Nintendo told the dude "pls stop or were gonna have to pursue legal action", guy agreed but didnt follow through, so Nintendo pursued legal action.
And I'm supposed to believe Nintendo are the *** in this case??

That calls for out of court settlement not for posing as a fool. And even then you want a lawyer.
Well, they can still be *** despite not being wrong,
I'm not giving Nintendo a pass for the past shady ***they done, but you have to have single digit IQ (or so high IQ you're socially inept) to have a lawsuit thrown at you, be given the out to escape with zero penalty provided you stop what you're doing, pinky swear to stop, then proceed to do the very thing that started the lawsuit which you said you'd not do.
Its likely the high IQ and socially inept, because I doubt single digit IQ could do the things he was doing.
surprised the litigation is in US. I knew Japan had very strict laws against modding, didn't know they had any chance at winning here though.
Oh no the US also has very strict copyright and anti-piracy laws. You profit off someone else's work and they come for you, you better back down. This guy had no chance of winning.

Two things can be true at the same time: you are totally right and the dude was REALLY dumb to represent himself, but it's also a huge idiocy that this sort of lawsuit is won by who has the most money rather than, you know, what the law actually says, and Nintendo is famously very litigious even in cases when there absolutely no illegal act being committed.

I mean, maybe don’t say you’re gonna stop doing something, then not stop. Especially when dealing with a company like Nintendo who’d punch a puppy in the face for looking too close to the cover pupper of Nintendogs. Then sue the owner

I could point out any number of companies or industries that are greedier but that could be construed as political ESPECIALLY as the greediest grow exceedingly wealthy sucking money out of governments.

Because the horror stories are true? Amazon breaks laws to save money, and then poaches/hires Justice department lawyers to fight defend their bad behavior. Worse case? They pay the fine and still have a net gain.
Guy should have had representation and went for a jury trial instead of a bench. Installing modchips in consoles isn't illegal. I don't care how smart he is, he was an idiot.

Piracy is illegal, so installing modchips for that purpose is also illegal.

Why do I feel like Amazon is in the top 5?
Out of all the retailers that I've ever done business with, Amazon isn't anywhere close to top 50 greediest company.
Amazon has a much nicer return and refund policy than most smaller retailers, and sometimes when their system has an error they gave me free stuff for compensations.
Many small retailer are far more stingy on refund policy and customer services. (AND they also paid minimum wage + 6 days per week work).
Nevermind the fact that Amazon tend to undercut product price far more than other retailers. Which benefits the customer.
As for sucking money out of government, who doesn't like to do business with government? As long as the business delivered their value from government money it doesn't matter.
I think people just has higher standard on very big companies like Amazon because they make more and get more attention. I can easily name 50 small retail businesses that's has way worse business practices and customer services than Amazon every single day.

Hey, maybe that guy purposely created a "innocent little people v.s evil mega corp" victimized image for himself so he can won some public sympathy from Nintendo haters! There are actually people who believed infringe copyright from big company is "justice" lol.
