If people form addictions to anything it can render them into various conditions/positions in life. It isn't just this game.

"Addiction" is not caused by external stimuli/substances/objects/experiences, but is rather a symptom of underlying, internal suffering. The "addiction" is the escape from dread and immense suffering. We externalize "addiction" as a concept because it helps typical people (neurotypical, non-suffering, non-traumatized) to understand the phenomenon by shorthand (as we do with most symptoms of mental illness). We focus on how the externally visible behaviors impact typical people; on how inconvenient or unpleasant it is for us to handle these behaviors. Or we focus on specific cultural/social roles the "addict" is supposed to be filling, and on how the "addiction" impacts their ability to do so. This model of "addiction" does a huge disservice to us all.
The reason this particular game is prominently subject to "addiction" is that it has a more robust and complex effort/reward system than any other I'm aware of. The sheer variety and depth of content, and the love that was put into the original development, make for a wonderful respite from the horrors of embodied existence for many of us.
Just my two cents as an over-educated, super duper neurodivergent person who has been playing since release.

Do one with a hobo ridin the rails playing FFXI! These are some photos I took walking through New York.
These pics were freakken great, especially this one. The RMT site and the FFXIAH front page with this post being at the top of the recent list had me rolling. Thank you so much for making these. I think these will help give players peace of mind knowing they will still be able to grind during tough times

i know this is old but its my first time seeing it soooooo, imho people who would get so addicted to something that theyd be homeless are idiots and heres why:
Id say I game far too much for it to be considered healthy so you could call me an addict, however while I may be addicted Id never be homeless why... because i know games and my subscription cost money, i know i need electricity and internet to play said games and a roof over my head to put them in, so i NEED my job as a steady source of income to feed my addiction. So my job is ALWAYS gonna come first/be my first priority, because without it , I lose access to the thing Im addicted to.
As for people losing relationships over it.... I see it like this... my gaming habit didnt just start yesterday and is no secret to anyone... so you knew about this when you met me, before you decided you wanted to be with me, so if you choose to ignore the "red flags" and be with me anyway thats your fault, theres the door, youre free to leave whenever you want.
But Ive never had that problem because anyone ive dated is a gamer too so 9 times out of 10 theyre right there next to me doing it too and we're doing it together

Cool story bro
Addiction is not a rational process that can be avoided by thinking, it's a neurochemical process where your brain is unable to find gratification in anything else than a single specific thing, be it chemical substances, food, activities, or what else. [*]
If you can just go like "oh well I need to have a job so I can play" or "wife is important, gotta pause the game", you're not addicted, you're fixated, which is something else and rarely leads to people starving, losing their house and jobs, and spouses.
I don't know why you felt the need to come here and say "it's stupid to being addicted since I am not addicted". Duh.
[*] extremely simplified, ofc

I hope you get a mental illness (beyond the r*tardedness you already clearly have) so you can know what it's like jackass.
Asking someone with a mental illness to "just not have it" is like asking a person with no legs to "just walk it off".

Me and my two best buddies, Jack Daniels and Jim Beam, we trio Sortie and Ambuscade every day just to stay ahead of the curve.

I almost burnt down my GFs house once I waited days for Simurgh claim... I had popcorn on the stove...He popped along with the popcorn... I continued to fight... Flames and smoke billow out of the pot... Yet I continue the battle... The GF is yelling at me to put out the fire...Sim is at 30%... I can't stop now... continue the fight... The GF is hitting me with a pillow in the face I dodge the attacks in RL... Then hit PD on thf... finish the battle... No drop... The fire is out and a house filled with smoke... Was one of the most intense gaming moments of my life...

If it had dropped, would you have remembered that day as 'a good day'?

I certainly would have been a lot happier about the situation... I had to clean the ceiling after... I would have been smugly saying to myself... it was worth it. However, this was not the case

I have never played an MMO so addicting that it may have contributed to some players going homeless. This was a long time ago, maybe 10 years, like back when you could play the game on Xbox 360, some people I played with told me they were homeless while in-game. Being younger at the time, it never made me realize how powerful this game could be. It's almost as if that message that pops up before you load into the game was trying to warn me about something. I hope those guys are doing okay now, being such a long time since this happened.
I am now curious; were these rare events that I stumbled on, or something other players have witnessed themselves? Was this game truly destroying people, and if so, does it do it today?
