One thing I do notice though, is that as FFXI had gotten lower in population, there are a lot of extreme weirdos that stuck around or creeps.

Haters gonna hate I know, but I have seen more of them play on a certain private server. Probably because they prefer their game to be more policed, which SE does not do anything, even though SE changed how the blacklist and privacy work in the new FF14 7.0. If you add someone to your blacklist they will disappear, and you can set your character profile to private so they can stop viewing yours every day.

As someone playing a female character, I doubt their new blacklist and privacy policy will work, but I have to see.

FFXI is an old game, birthed and popular before gaming went mainstream in 2006. It's also older internet, before zoomers and feelings and openly super hyper gay culture got to really bully people around/loudly proclaim that everyone playing the game is 110% gay. (this basically lets any lady play XIV essentially have a basket of sassy gay friends on demand)

It didn't grow alongside social media or trends, so the people who socialize about it, outside of it, are few and far in between. Relative to XIV, which has been deep throating twitter since at least mid Heavensward.

Women like gossip, sharing, socializing, artistic pursuits, socialization hierarchy, and fantasy men. XIV has all of that and a bag of chips. XIV also has elaborate, new age modding capability, allowing women to accessorize even further than the glamour system allows in game, often choosing to make their characters look nothing like anything from FFXIV's actual game. Which they then complain about on social media, which gets the gab going, and SE cares about that gab, because the gabbers have money too.

Basically, XIV had a perfect storm to get more ladies playing it. Came out after it was deemed socially acceptable for women to game without losing social status (which no woman ever lost for this anyway, but...). Was revamped from XI 2.0 into being World of Warcraft: Final Fantasy Edition. Which WoW is where it's gotten most of its players anyway. Has a social media component. Has player driven content catered towards womanly wants.

In 2024 A.D. playing a game for its gameplay is seen as being sweaty try hard gamer. FFXI is mostly just its gameplay, especially nowadays. It doesn't have or pretend to have an air of cozy game (think Stardew Valley/Minecraft/Animal Crossing) like FFXIV. There is no regiment of casuals giving pats on the back and affirmations of, "It's ok to suck at the game."

And this is all just modern comparisons, without really getting into XI's history of linkshells doing crazy ***like trading HNM and Sky drops for sex or things like that.

I think I could count the number of ladies I met in FFXI in XI's hey day on my fingers and toes.

But like half of the ones I'm thinking about are ladies I met on this forum and not in game, lol.

But let's see... off the top of my head...

Ishadowl - LS Leads Fiancee who inevitably cheated on him with other LS member IRL

Noobergoober - Same LS Lead's younger sister who had her PC ripped out of the wall for continuing to talk/play with me after I got kicked out of that LS

Mayadeh - LS token RDM always drunk on wine in Dynamis in VoIP. Canadian

Kahlannfaith - 20 something lady, also RDM, who shared her problems with me a lot, most of which pertained to her SAM boyfriend who was her BF IRL and was mildly abusive/manipulative. That, "13 year old me helping a 25 year old woman through her first divorce" meme sort of applies here

Karianna - Cutie patootie lady from California that quit and gave me 10 million gil.

Qoh - Queen of Hearts lady from Valdosta. Huge Falcons fan. Played on Dial Up. Showed me the way on my intro into XI endgame.

Fayla - WHM main that I don't remember too well.

Symoan - WHM main during Abyssea era. Married to a THF who was in LS who was in the Navy, and hardly around due to being deployed a lot at the time. She died in her sleep quite unexpectedly at the tender age of 26.

Chuuuuu - FFXIah denizen. Pikachu fan. Funny and cute and has dated a few guys I've known from here and from in game. By the time I met her, her character was mostly just fish botting to supply gil to her BF at the time iirc. Play XIV with her occasionally still.

Daus - FFXIah denizen and artiste. Met on here, played XIV with. She got married to a guy in the Army iirc. Now's a full time RN.

Liela - FFXIah denizen. Haven't seen her post in eons, though. I think her character is still active on Odin, but not sure if it's her playing.

Yomisha - FFXIah denizen. Also haven't seen her post in a bit. Facebook friends. She got married and has a super cute daughter that she's super proud of, in spite of saying on FFXIah years ago that she'd never have kids, heh.

Azraelina - Yandere anime girl and FFXiah denizen. Last I heard she went off with Uriel from here, I think? Dunno what happened after that.

Savannahlynn - FFXIah denizen. I think she married Krizz and they still play XI together?

Fyris(Soree) - My ex. Used to post art here on FFXIah, but also mainly on Deviantart. Got to know her through Deviantart, and we played XI together after that for about 2 years and some change.

Petisu - FFXI artiste. Met through Deviantart. Never played the game with her, but she is a precious cinnamon roll.

Niniann - FFXIah denizen and resident perv. Got married quite a while back and gave up on her pervy ways.

Zahrah - FFXIah denizen. Uber cute architect from TX as I remember. Hasn't posted here in a coon's age, but was one of the FFXIah LS Ni regular posters for a long time.

Kalila - FFXIah denizen and purple haver. Gave up posting here due to not liking the atmosphere after a while. Played a ton of XIV with her and her husband Dameion (he's one of my besties).

So like... 8 met in game. 11 met on FFXIah or other sites before in game. Over the course of 20 years. With the last in game one met around 2011(Symoan).

Ladies will/have played, the atmosphere just has to be to their liking.

The developers of a game tend to lean into whatever the most profitable group is playing the game, which is why ff14 has changed so much over the years from what it originally was and is what it is now.

So, first:

(from this post)
Quote:
- Unless you profess your gender in every post, people assume you are male.
- If you point out you are female, you almost always get harassed.
- If someone finds out you are female, you almost always get harassed.
- If you pretend you're male, or purposefully don't profess your gender, people treat you a lot better. Most online games I play as male characters for that reason.
- Less so now, but in the early days of the internet, it wasn't socially acceptable or even considered safe for girls to use the internet.
- Male nerd culture tends to exclude women.
- Women in STEM and other fields that use the internet a lot tend to get harassed (I was studying math and teaching myself web design in 1994-2001, and got harassed a lot.)
- Most online activities (games, message boards, porn, etc.) are designed to appeal to men and boys, and often have content that is rather offensive towards women, or just doesn't appeal.

Women are not a monolitic hive mind so this sentence and the entire rest of the post is entirely deranged.

Fourth:
(Unfortunately I appear to have lost the screenshots so I'll have to go by memory)
Quote:
<DudetteWhoPlaysAmithra> yes I am pregnant and I have a girlfriend ^^
<DudeWhoPlaysAtaru> how could you do this to me D:
<DudeWhoPlaysAtaru> I'll pretend you never told me that
<DudeWhoPlaysAtaru> so I can keep having fantasies about you

TL;DR: FFXI's player base is still to this day very reflective of the mid '00s internet, which was a time where women were facing constant harassment outside of specific communities, and only/mostly seen as an object of desire or target for attention/affection. The result is women keeping to themselves and not broadcasting their gender openly.

While still a minority, there's still plenty of women around but chances are a) they didn't tell you about their gender and b) they don't join PUGs and stick playing with trusted people. A subset of b) is the girlfriends/wives who only made a character to play with their significant other who is much more invested in the game than them (there's three such people in my LSs on Cerberus: all three only ever login to play together with their husband, and if he isn't on they don't bother.)

It's always funny to me how some men treat women like children, you do know women... like men right? They often like getting attention on games that are male dominated, some of them love it to the point they flirt with every man that shows them any attention. It's fun for them, I've known lots of women like this and there is nothing wrong with it either.

It's only really a problem if the guy won't take no for an answer if she isn't interested, and very few guys goto that level of nonsense cause it's just not worth the effort.

Some guys act like women are all shrinking violets and are horrified if guys show any interest in them. I think it's often projection cause they have played a female character and are horrified if it has happened to them, and overlay that disgust onto women being in that position.

I've known lots of women on XI and a good chunk of them loved attention from guys, and 100% do play into it and even see it as something they enjoy playing the game. If you think anything else you're delusional.

There's nothing deranged about generalizations. Women aren't exempt from generalizations.

Every generalization I mentioned comes from an example of women I've known from XI and/or XIV.

There is nothing wrong with generalizing, if you don't do that you can't have a conversation. If something is true of the vast majority it's enough to call it out as being true.

Some bears won't eat your face off if you meet them in the wild, are you gonna stop and hear the bear out or are you already running if you see one?
