Apologies if I didn't search well enough for an answer.
I am unable to take screenshots. Every time I attempt to do so, I get a "failed to convert to PNG" message, and nothing in my screenshot folder. No matter what I try to take them as- bmp, jpg, png- whether or not I get an error message, nothing in the folder.
Running in various compatibility modes hasn't helped. Nothing has helped. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
If this is something really simple I will feel really stupid.

If you're using dgvoodoo, that breaks the screenshot functionality in Windower.

Mine was broken at one point (and I do use dgvoodoo), then it fixed itself somehow /shrug

windows print screen, then paste into microsoft paint. then crop/save

I tried that, but it didn't work for some reason.
If you use windows + print screen it will put them in a separate Screenshots folder. C:\Users\Username\Pictures
If you're not sure what your pc username is or want to easily find the folder just go to "This PC" and type screenshots in the search bar.

sorry but I'm getting none of this either. I'm having to use my laptop atm, which has a version of FFXI but it's very outdated with no dgvoodoo. Just can't get any other way to work on my desktop

No, its been an ongoing problem for over a decade now. I have tried multiple times to get a solution and nothing. Someone comes and bumps the thread saying they fixed it, but they just got a good instance. Like you said sometimes the instance allows you to screenshot, most times no. This is doomed into obscurity. I have bumped threads like this multiple times and it just goes away. I think its related to dgvoodoo, but the best option for now is to just use a diff program or print screen and paste and crop.

The problem is there are lots of other issues, for instance reshade cause also cause problems and I believe there is also a problem where the save directory is setup wrong.
try changing file type to other things like jpg too Doesnt matter, same thing: Works sometimes, sometimes not.
A lot of times people will come saying they found a fix, only to not know they were on an instance that allows the screenshots. I have tried that change and it doesn't work for me and i dont use reshade
Me asking a question for the sake of asking: Why is the default SE PrintScreen/screenshot functionality so much faster than Windower and Ashita's screenshot plugins?
