Greatest shooter ever, and a top-10 best-ever player, depending on how you rank them. Even at the end of his career, when he gets going there's just nobody like him, now or ever.
Greatest shooter ever, yes, no debate. Greatest PG ever? Maybe, give me either him or Magic. Think Magic has the slight edge overall, curry is the better shooter
Association Football, aka Soccer, people call it football.
Americans* (and countries that follow their naming sense, like Japan)
The rest of the world calls it "football" (or kickball, like the Italian name "Calcio", and maybe the Chinese name?), and calls those contact sports (that are mostly specific to their respective countries & where they hold the ball with their hands most of the time) "American football", "Canadian football", etc. So outside of NA (and a few other countries perhaps), nobody will get confused if you call it "football" and think of the contact sports. It's kinda "default football", whereas the rest of the sports have to be specified their countries of origin.
Obviously it's easier for Americans to call their favorite sport just "football" and pick another name for the way less popular association football, but I find it weird to popularize the American name (which is said to be British in origin, but even the Brits quickly discarded it) in the rest of the world, considering how unpopular football is in America.
I remember back in 94 when the World Cup was held in American for the first time, it was said that, until just before it started, most Americans didn't even know that it was being held there lol. That was how unpopular "soccer" was to them. Not sure how much that changed.

To be precise, the game being played in 206 BC China was called kickball. If using literal translation Chinese also call soccer "football".
That being said, there is a different Chinese term for those oval shaped balls sports like rugby/American/Canadian/Australian football so there are zero confusion between different sports in Chinese, I would say Chinese got a pass on this matter.
This term doesn't exist in English, so there are no way to differentiate those sports unless full name or "soccer" is used.
Not just American, but also Canada/Australia. Due to Canadian/Australian football also exists there. Since soccer is a term used to avoid confusion, you would see those English speaking countries with different kind of football would use the term soccer to differentiate them.
Edit: I think South Africa also use the term soccer.
Because North America + Australia has very large number of native English speakers combined, for me it's easier to default "soccer" whenever I am using English so extra communication isn't needed. For other countries that only plays soccer, they probably don't need to deal with the confusion in their own language to begin with.
Also I am pretty sure most English speaker knows what soccer is. So even if they are not North American/Australian, the chance of causing confusion with the term soccer is still lower than football.
Personally, it's less about "popularize the American name" but more about communication efficiency.

Americans were the first to officially adopt the term "soccer", Americans make up the majority of the native English speakers that call the sport "soccer", and they just have the biggest influence on global culture all around, hence it's okay to attribute the use to them. It's a form of generalization.
The rest I already implied here:
Obviously it's easier for Americans to call their favorite sport just "football" and pick another name for the way less popular association football
And what applies to America applies to Canada, Australia etc since it's the same situation of having a more popular sport take over the name "football". If I'm in one of those countries, I'd say "soccer" for effective communication.
Unless you're American or from one of the other "soccer" countries, rest assured that neither Panta nor me would get confused if you talk about "football" :p

I am and I thought you knew it >.> >.> I was raised in NA and learned English in school. I am just using English like how I learned it. Football is foreign influence from Europe to me :< Why popularize the European way!
I already halved the sweeteners, now Ive been diluting the coffee 1:4 (I used to do 1:1, or half coffee half water).
I guess more addicted than to the drink itself, it is my addiction to constantly have a cup of liquid close so I can have a reason to change my ongoing actions
