There's a definite lack of optimization with the game currently. I shouldn't have as much trouble holding 60fps as I do, even without physx enabled. I've never seen my GPU temps stay in the 70's consistently for hours.

Probably just a random Bethesda bug that I have to take as par for the course and drop back to a prior save before it glitched, but does anyone know of a fix for Preston's never-ending bag of quests locking up?

I had two from him open and at the "talk to Preston to complete" stage.

Then he approached me about retaking the Castle.

I retook the Castle and spoke to him.

One completed.

I talk to him again.

It rolls the "completed: Talking to Preston" text on the screen, but then it doesn't complete the quest...

...and now Preston will only talk to me, but I can't get him to do anything. The dialogue menu doesn't come up, I can't take him as a companion, I can't trade with him, etc.

Not sure if there's something obvious I'm missing but I didn't want to go any further with the save until I had it worked out.

I'm pretty sure you have to do the quests at Castle before that will progress. There should be a coffin-nail hard old woman there asking you to do some stuff. FYI, she likes it when you talk dirty.

I'll give it a go. I had done it on a prior save without incident, so I thought once I established the radio beacon there that would clear up, but I'll play through them and see where it goes, doesn't take long to get the cannons setup anyhow.

Thanks.

I'm on PC, but I've already got my money's worth and it seems that console players are having less headaches with bugs. I still can't imagine playing a FPS with a controller, though.

I tried the steam controller for a couple hours and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but I'm playing a melee-only, dugged up gold miner from the mid 1800s. Might be a little different for sneaky snipers and such.

I can't imagine trying to run and gun and quickscope without the speed and accuracy of a mouse. I would imagine it would be nearly impossible to play a sniper on the higher difficulties with a controller.

I don't even think XI is precise enough with a controller, let alone this.

Though admittedly, I played ~300 hours of Fallout 3 on the PS3 without serious complaint. But in 3 you could rely so exclusively on VATS to slow down the action for you, and with 4 VATS doesn't bring everything to a halt even.

If you did a melee or in-your-face damage reduction + shotgun/automatic weapon build a controller would probably be decent.

But yeah, I can't imagine sniping freehand with a controller.

Give him a super-sledge and turn down dialogue volume. Thank me later.

"Leave human junk, it useless!"

Strong really is the hammer. He takes giant chunks of HP off everything in his path. He isn't very smart, but he's a great tanky follower for someone using more of a stealth/sniper type character.

If you aren't commanding your followers in fights, you aren't getting the most out of them.

They can't all be Marcus or Fawkes or even Lily, can they? He's a big, dumb super mutant. He hits things and they die. I'm too drugged out of my gourd to listen to his opinion on anything, so it's never bothered me.

He said that a few times when I first picked him up. I dunno. He's a big temperamental idiot. I'll stick with Piper and Val, when I want a companion at all.

Mostly I just chill out with my lone wanderer perk though taking my 100 lbs more carry weight and damage resistance.

Hey, I can appreciate solid roleplaying, even if you're basically just a drug-addled raider!

Heads up, the lone wanderer perks persist with Dogmeat as your follower. Most definitely one of the best overall routes.

I haven't been able to find Dogmeat for quite a while. I don't remember sending him anywhere, he's not at the red rocket. I kind of want to find him without just using the summon command.

"Drug-addled influential raider?"

I've not decided who to go with, really. I'll decide further tonight, I think.

Make a save before you decide, play it different ways, decide which you want to go into endgame with.

Raiders are usually evil. I'm not evil, more of a berserker than anything. I'll help rescue that idiot settler that keeps getting kidnapped, even if Preston could do it himself. Those radiant quests start repeating themselves faster than I thought they would.

I still don't get why they do that. Clear out this random raider hot-spot for the 8th time this week. It's not like I didn't give every settler there a minigun and power armor already.

My only complaint with the game is too many pointless side missions. Like kill x type missions. Report back repeat.

Yeah the radiant quests (what those kill x at y quests are) are annoying cause you can never keep them out of your log.

on the topic of drugs, I've only used stim packs and rad away i have no idea how the rest work or do.

Individually, they're pretty worthless except Jet, which comes in handy in a few quests. But, when you start making your own and start stacking their effects, man do they make a difference. Just make sure to carry around a few adictol's unless you're planning on going the withdrawal perk route.
