For those who don't know or haven't heard of the new movie releasing today based off the graphic (pun intended) novel, Fifty Shades of Grey seems to push the controversial line on what is or isn't acceptable. Or has it?

Just another day at your local theater or has visual cinematic entertainment gone too far?

Well, aside from controversial buzz surrounding the movie, it seems Target is now selling memorabilia from the movie - right next to Angry Birds toothbrushes.

What kind of marketing is this that we force children to see this kind of not age-appropriate material?

Thoughts?

The top one appears to be a sleep mask, what are the others? I know personal lubricant is usually behind a case.

50 Shades is about straight-up abuse.

It's not "kink". It's not "consensual BDSM". That could, in fact, be sexy for many people and I'd understand that. I'm all about erotic literature if that's your thing. I encourage people to pursue their sexual interests.

But that's not what it is. It's about psychological and physical abuse.

And that's before we even get to how *** awful it is as a piece of literature. Even if you cast aside the content, it's a trainwreck of grammar and syntax. It's seriously *** terrible.

Forget just children. That crap isn't suitable for anyone.

According to that website, these are just a few of the products that are available.

"In January 2015, a line of Fifty Shades of Grey sex toys, including the "Yours and Mine Adult Vibrating Love Ring," "No Peeking Soft Twin Blindfold Set," and "Silky Caress Silk Lubricant" hit the shelves at Target retail stores across the U.S. Stores were instructed to place the products in the back of the "adult health section," but at least one store had the Fifty Shades of Grey items temporarily displayed in a questionable location"

Wasn't it also originally a poorly written fan-fiction involving the characters of the Twilight franchise? I read up somewhere that the entire basis for that novel revolved around some shitty fan fic written for Twilight. Need citation obviously, but if it turns out to be true then LOL

Not surprising. Retail makes minimal efforts when it comes to making inappropriate items more discrete for discerning adult purchase; especially when it's a cash cow and highly marketed franchise like FSOG.

So it's like Twilight but with sexual abuse instead of vampires?

FSOG.
Call it that and make it a war novel, it'd work.

There were people trying to defend this... "artist" by claiming she had "researched" BDSM and the kink lifestyle intensively. Turns out that she was actually "inspired" by the idea of the Twilight characters in questionable scenarios related to kink she had seen through porn.

There were some interviews where the publicist for her had claimed they had done psychological research into the fetishistic lifestyle of BDSM, but to anyone in the lifestyle, they knew it was a crock of ***, and as Ramyrez pointed out, incredibly bad writing.

I'm sure it would make Magnuss cringe just pointing out all the grammar errors.

more like fifty shades of bondage, how is the novel/movie any different from one of those Japanese visual novels? ._.

The Japanese visual novels are better written, and at least have some basis in reality.

The 50 Shades of ***happens to be a trilogy of pure garbage writing, that somehow made a best-sellers list.

Just imagine being the just who cleans the theater after this. If it was me, I'd just quit my job now because there are a BUNCH of women who actually liked this crap.

Didn't do a thing for me.

Some excerpts (source):

Quote:
"His voice is warm and husky like dark melted chocolate fudge caramel... or something."

Quote:
"And from a very tiny, underused part of my brain - probably located at the base of my medulla oblongata near where my subconscious dwells - comes the thought: He's here to see you."

Quote:
"I feel the color in my cheeks rising again. I must be the color of The Communist Manifesto."

Quote:
"His lips part, like he's taking a sharp intake of breath, and he blinks. For a fraction of a second, he looks lost somehow, and the Earth shifts slightly on its axis, the tectonic plates sliding into a new position."

Quote:
"He smiles, then strides with renewed purpose out of the store, slinging the plastic bag over his shoulder, leaving me a quivering mass of raging female hormones."

Quote:
"I can almost hear his sphinx-like smile through the phone."

Quote:
"I eye Christian's toothbrush. It would be like having him in my mouth. Hmm…"

Quote:
"Hmmm… he's soft and hard at once, like steel encased in velvet, and surprisingly tasty."

To be, or not to be--that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them. To die, to sleep--
No more--and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to. 'Tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wished. To die, to sleep--
To sleep--perchance to dream: ay, there's the rub,
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause. There's the respect
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
Th' oppressor's wrong, the proud man's contumely
The pangs of despised love, the law's delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of th' unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? Who would fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o'er with the pale cast of thought,
And enterprise of great pitch and moment
With this regard their currents turn awry
And lose the name of action. -- Soft you now,
The fair Ophelia! -- Nymph, in thy orisons
Be all my sins remembered...or something.

Close!

Written for women who are at a sexual/maturity level of 14-year-old girls, for countless reasons which you probably have little interest in discussing.

FTFY

Maybe an immature 30-year-old boy. 14-year-old boys generally aren't aware women even have emotions, feelings, or desires.

I mean, look at Fone.

I think the worse thing about this book/movie is it gives feminists a chance to try to make this book sound intelligent.
