Desperately Seeking Cephalopods, Advice Needed

I was one of those people who pulled the orobon on first try the first time I completed this assault so now I'm struggling a bit this time...

I understand the concept, I understand which npc is the right one to fish around, etc etc

What I'm needing help with is when they give you vague, positive clues, are there any other indications you're in the right spot? ie: Does pulling up a kraken mean anything vs pugils/crabs? Does the clue "the islet directly across from me" mean next to the npc or further, actually across from him? 0/1 today, hoping for success tomorrow as I'm 49/50. Thanks in advance!
