A fun* thing for me is that I don't get a choice about what lyrics I memorize. I hear a song a few times and they're in there.
Which means I know every popular country song from 1993-2000 because there was only one radio station in the town I grew up, it was a country station, and if you wanted local news, weather, or any other pertinent information you needed to get...you listed to WLMI in the morning before school.
So I've got so much Shania Twain, Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson, Garth Brooks, etc. in my head it's painful. I don't hate all country, but I thoroughly wish there weren't so much of it in my head that I didn't want.
*not fun even a little, aside from the times I sing along when we hear it in a public place and my wife looks at me aghast and asks, "what's wrong with you? Why do you know this!?"
If I could sing ever a tiny little bit pleasantly, I'd make an amazing frontman for a wedding-type cover band.
...sadly for everyone involved, if a deaf person were granted the power to hear, and the first music they heard was me singing, they'd want to know why music is a multi-billion dollar industry; who would pay to listen to that?
Country used to be more of a guilty pleasure for me in middle school and high school, before I officially exclaimed, "*** it! I like everything! Music goes with mood."
Of course, my dad listened to a lot of Outlaw Country and Southern Rock from the 1970's, so I was always exposed to it. I did like Dixie Chicks, and Garth Brooks's 'I Got Friends In Low Places' was the blotto collective scream song of college. Ryan Bingham's 'Mescalito' album is what kind of brought me back around. If you like Bob Dylan, you might like Ryan Bingham. It's more folksy.
This guy is considered Modern Outlaw Country...

Depressing but pretty. It makes me think of my American grandfather. My ex actually showed me this song a month or so after my grandfather died, so put two and two together.
Patsy Cline was actually really popular in Germany in the beginning of American occupation. My grandmother liked Patsy Cline...

My personal favorite.
I think I've gabbed enough about Country.

Quote: If you like Bob Dylan
Bob Dylan is the epitome of "I respect the hell out of this person, but don't like his music". Him and Prince.
I like some country, but the 90s girly-country stuff...Dixie Chicks, Shania, and their ilk...kinda hated them. Always felt they were the antithesis of country; they were the Brittney or Backstreet Boys of country. I always called it Count-Pop, and that's not pronounced as you would pronounce Mr. Chocula. It rhymes with "runt".
I like Alan Jackson and the like okay; a lot of the current stuff is decent too. I don't listen to it much, but I can respect it. The only stuff I really dislike is that every other song has to mention God and America like 20 times.
I guess they know where their bread gets buttered, though.
I'm not a big fan of Patsy Cline. My mother is, and I used to have to listen to too much of it in the car; so many types of music I picked up from my mom, but that isn't one.
I'm a huge Jimmy Buffett fan, so I can't ever use the blanket statement "oh, I hate country".

Bob Dylan is the epitome of "I respect the hell out of this person, but don't like his music". I'm like that with those two, but I'd also add in the Beatles. Without them, modern music would not exist in the form we know of it, today. That being said, I don't have to like their music. Sure, once or twice a song will stick out to me, but the Beatles as a whole just don't appeal to me.
I respect the *** out of them, though.

I'm not a huge fan of their entire catalogue, but there's certainly a lot I enjoy.
Same of their subsequent solo works.
I enjoy some (though certainly not all) of George Harrison's stuff a lot.

from Hoenn Week Never Ends by Soundcloud Team Alpha
4) Polar Bear Club - Song to Persona

6) The Microphones - (Something)
7) Say Anything - The Futile
8) Two Quiet Suns - Backward Finger
9) Shlohmo - Later
10) Fortune Howl - The Garden
Dang overall very nice selection. Some stuff I really like but haven't heard in a while. Gogo shuffle.

The lack of Nirvana songs disturbs me !
I'm of the hated select few who feels Dave Grohl's best work was all after Nirvana.
By Ramyrez 2015-05-13 08:14:20
I love seeing music threads bumped, especially when they're mine!
I'll play today.
1. Jimmy Buffet -- Tin Cup Chalice
2. Queens of the Stone Age -- Little Sister
3. The Spencer Davis Group -- Gimme Some Lovin'
4. Harvey Danger -- Flagpole Sitta
5. Miles Davis -- Flamenco Sketches
6. Steeley Dan -- Pearl of the Quarter
7. Frank Zappa -- The Torture Never Stops
8. Queens of the Stone Age -- Go With the Flow
9. Natalie MacMaster -- David's Jig
10. The Aristocrats -- Sweaty Knockers
(There are like 4 Queens of the Stone Age songs in like 800 on this list. How they managed to come up twice in 6 songs is a mystery. Randomness!)

Please note I didn't say I dislike Nirvana.
I just like a lot of Dave's other projects more.
Edit: And frankly, I got Nirvana oversaturation back in the 90s. I was the exact age group that went apeshit for them, and when Kurt killed himself it just intensified. So that may play a factor as well. Listening enjoyment aside, you can't say they were a major factor in American music and worthy of their storied position in many people's minds.

It is to me, but I'm a bit of a music snob.
Natalie MacMaster and The Aristocrats I can understand not knowing. They're pretty niche; I only know the latter because I blundered into them on Spotify, and the former is a violin/fiddle player (the song that came up is pretty well known, however, and you may recognize from its appearance in several Scottish-themed movies). But the rest are all kind of heavyweights in their genres and/or classic songs.

"Psychadelic" is a fun choice, given how vehemently anti-drug Zappa was. XD

Yeah but...I mean, I'm not a fan of boy bands, but I know the Backstreet Boys.
Miles Davis is a major, major, major name in Jazz.
You aren't in the U.S. though, at least if your flag is accurate, so I guess some of these are more understandable.

Okay, so, Spathaian made a comment on the Random thread that got me thinking.
So frequently people say "Oh, my music tastes are all over the place and so weird; people constantly can't understand my tastes".
I've said it. Spath said it (paraphrased). People say it all the time.
So I'm interested to know what people's /random playlists are actually like.
So I'm asking you to put your library, load the whole damned thing, randomize it, and tell us the first 10 tracks. As a bonus, if you'd like to take your favorite of those 10 tracks and give us a YouTube video, please do.
This is meant to be light-hearted. And it's random, so let's keep it honest! No finagling to get your favorite "quirky" tracks in!*
I will, of course, start the ball rolling.
1. Them Crooked Vultures -- New Fang
2. Sloop John B -- The Beach Boys
3. That's What Living Is To Me -- Jimmy Buffett
4. Stuck With You -- Huey Lewis & The News
5. Lay Down -- Priestess
6. Anna Molly -- Incubus
7. II B.S. - Edit -- Charles Mingus
8. My Rival -- Steely Dan
9. Song 2 -- Blur
10. Diamond Eyes -- Defttones
Of these songs, I'm going to take Blur's Song 2 as my favorite -- not for it's musical quality, because it certainly doesn't top the list in that respect, but it's on my list because it's used, at different times, as the Pittsburgh Penguins goal song or winning end-of-game song.
