For the last few weeks FFXI has been running at unusually high CPU, I've tried the following countermeasures:

-Full scan Malwarbytes and removed all malware found.
-Ran TDSSKiller and removed rootkits.
-Tried Rkill.
-Scanreg
-Defrag
-System Restore
-Disk error scan
-Updated drivers
-Removed shady PUP's. Computer is oldish(got it in 2011 I think)

Specs:
HP Pavilion g6 Notebook
Intel Core i3 CPU Dual Core @2.67Ghz
4.00 GB RAM

Graphics:
Intel HD Graphics
Radeon TM HD 6470M

Sound:
IDT High Definition Audio Codec
Intel Display Audio

Netcard:
Qualcomm Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
Realtec PCIe FE Family Controller

It's not exactly a cutting edge system but it should be sufficient to run an 12 year old game at moderate specs. Mind you, I am supersampling however I never had random 99-100% CPU before or if I did it was extremely rare.

I have a hijackthis log report if anyone can scour it for anything noteworthy :/

Does your cpu% ever go crazy with vanilla pol?

Nah only in game. It gets so bad, the sound starts to tear. I also set the pol.exe affinity to 1 processor but that feels like a placebo. Not sure if I should run combofix since I don't think it's malware but maybe registry or something?

I run at 1-5% but as soon as the game loads it shoots up to 99-100% pretty quick then it dies down for a few min but as soon as I'm in town or in combat it climbs back up to 99-100% again. If I'm standing idle it's fine. I'd like to think it's configurations/settings but like I said this is a fairly new development.

The thing is it's only using like 50,000ish Kb memory when I check task manager yet im at 99-100%.

One thing I forgot to mention, when I check resource monitor, I see a process called "System Interrupts". It's bouncing up and around the top of the list, moving from top to middle to top again every few seconds and I can't stop or kill it.

Video card troubles can cause high CPU usage. It's only a guess, but it sounds to me like that is what the trouble is.

Sounds like you know your stuff, but have you cleaned your system out? Heat can do funny things

I noticed that you have onboard and dedicated video, did you by chance change something to where it's using the wrong gpu?

Try forcing it to use the dedicated gpu for XI (if it already is, flip/flop it and see if it fixes it).

I run FFXI in vmware, since you have the juice maybe try VMing it and see if that works for you, I do it mostly so I don't have to worry about malware from browsing, and it's isolated, I guess I could take the extra step and kill the other ports, but hey.

edit: If switching to the integrated video works better your dedicated gpu may be dying or overheating.

edit: on another note, one time I had an issue on a laptop with FFXI if I installed virtualbox, whatever it used to latch onto the network card caused XI to run like ***.

Well by vanilla POL I mean vanilla game. In game. Just wondering if it does the same when you aren't using windower.

If a process is jumping around too much for you to click it, sort by name instead of cpu usage and it won't move.

Forgive me, I'm not a computerologist, can you explain that it layman's terms? I think what you're saying is that there are two graphics cards(not sure why). How can I do the thing that you recommended I do? Ive never messed with Catalyst Control

Because for a bit some manufacturer's designed laptops with dedicated graphics (for power, games) and also the onboard/integrated graphics (use less power but would still suffice for normal operations, to save battery life).

I've never had to deal with it on ATI/AMD cards, only Nvidia, so I'm not really sure what to tell you beyond check the settings, you may be able to "right click" and select what graphics processor it's running with, or change defaults for everything).

but yeah, it would be in the Catalyst control software somewhere, don't sell yourself so short, you at least know where to go.

I think my computer uses the Radeon because it's stronger than the default intel one. When plugged in it uses Radeon but when unplugged it uses the intel GPU. I pretty much always have it plugged in, maybe the Radeon is burnt out from like 3 years of constant use? I'm going to switch to the intel one and see if it works(drop in performance because it's less powerful, so maybe it'll be the same result)

you do a driver update for either card recently? or maybe a windows update that did?

Open CommandPrompt and use MSconfig and check your auto-starts. There might be a lot of stuff you don't need that just starts. And cleaning out a dusty system. 99% of my household computer issues are these two things.

I think I solved the issue by switching to the Intel GPU. The thing is it's so weak(how can it be so weak to run an 11 year old game?!) I'm running at like 12-14 FPS in Bastok Market with like 3 ppl in zone with no weather/shadows 1024x576 resolution w/ supersampling, Bump Mapping, Mip Map1. :(

Maybe try a graphic card update for both, then try again with the ati card.
