Idk having worked rediculous hours for free I kinda like the idea of getting paid 1.5 or 2.0. And yeah sometimes overtime has to be approved depending on what you do often dependent on time scales and scheduling. So for alot of contractors no overtime at all until somethign absolutely needs to be done faster than it is currently being done then everyone gets lots of overtime. But if you are working that much time you clearly got approved. Also idk if it is state law up here or just government work but all the shipyard workers get 1.5 automatically for swings/mid shift which of course jumps to 2.0 if they are lucky enough to get overtime. Which never happens during the christmas time since they go on standdown for like a full month
