Pro tip: Brother is easy to hire and has INCREDIBLE speed. You can easily bait the entire team into following him, then toss it to Tidus for free goals.

It will be easier with hired players, but you don't really need to if you don't want. Game mechanics are simple enough to use the standard team.

In my last playthrough I used Nimrook (Airship, Corridor) as Goalkeeper, Defense was Ropp (Mi'ihen Highroad, Travel Agency) and Kulukan (Kilika Port, Tavern) As center I had Linna (Macalania Temple, Frozen Road) [beware she is protected by Dark Shiva if you don't get her while the story brings you there.] Offense: Tidus, Vilucha (Besaid Village, House) [protected by Dark Valefor later], Isken/Larbeight (both Kilika Port).
