In the case of the car I was buying I ended up getting quite a lot of features for free because I didn't want them. This was back in 2012 when the Chevy Sonic first debuted. They didn't make the turbo in an automatic sedan for the first half of the product run. I wanted the turbo in an automatic sedan and I wanted it to be blue.
There was literally one in the entire country for sale among authorized Chevy dealers, it was in like...South Dakota, iirc, and they wouldn't trade it to my dealer for anything. So the dealer had a nicer Sonic available in the crystal red tincoat (which is an upgrade cost), but isn't the color I wanted. It was also the LTZ, w/ sun roof, all weather mats, and a few other cosmetic/utility upgrades. But I just kept telling him "Yeah, but none of it is actually something I wanted, so stop trying to pitch it as selling me an upgrade." Eventually they just gave it to me for the price of the other one. ^^; It helped I was buying at the end of the model year and they wanted to move inventory, I'm sure.
