I heard a rumor that the principal knows how hard I'm having it and he's considering giving me Honors classes next year. It's a pipe dream right now, but it gives me a sense of false hope. I have these students and I need to teach them, but everything I try just fails. It really gets frustrating.

I'd bet 40-50% of them are beyond hope. that might make me a pessimist, but ***brother if they don't care, & their parents don't care, what reasonable chance do you even have? none. you just have to do your best, because if the support structure doesn't exist at home, you're *** right from the get-go. you can't 100% these kids man, some are destined for failure, & you can't change it.
If I was you, I'd just single out the 1-5 kids that care & focus on them.

I really hope you get Honors classes. You're pretty passionate about lit, and I think you could offer a lot more to those who want to learn.

Not an insult. I kind of am too, which is why I had to get out of the field entirely before I even began; I knew the direction it was headed and you can't help people when you're too angry over the big picture to look at them as individuals.
People talk a lot of ***on teachers, and like any profession there are some bad apples, but being a teacher now is harder than it's ever been and the vast majority of them are doing it for the right reasons, and they're to be commended for doing so.
