Are you moving over for a specific time duration (limited contract) or for an unspecified "long time"?

Things all make sense now, no wonder the Space Colony of Subligarian Refugees was not responding to my hails. We had sent it up during an armistice and Ina and I stayed behind as Sagi left, and we would let him know of a safe time to return. He must have returned in my absence....I have failed him. All my attempts to take over Ni for a foothold here were in vain! I am no longer Lord Skull of the Apple Vale... /bows my head in shame

At least one year.

What's the difference in time change from where you are? IIRC, travelling East to West you just have to stay up a little later. I imagine you'll be departing from CA, right?

EDIT: You won't have to exert yourself with Mississippi, Nik. That place is already a dump, along the gulf highway at least.

Detroit to LAX to Narita

and it's +13 hours (so right now it's almost midnight there)

How long will the flight itself be?

The flight is like 13hrs from LA to Tokyo.

edit: and its like 6hrs from Detroit to LA.

It's nearly a day of flying, and probably is a full day of travel depending on lay overs.

It'll be a total of something like 19hrs. (edit: Did some math in my head, was off by 2 hours)

I got Deception II for Vita and bringing along my 3ds, laptop and a few books, including Sword Art Online novel vol 1.

Longest flight for me was when I went to San Diego with my family years ago.

I'm also bringing my ipod and 2 sets of earphones (just in case)

It shouldn't be too bad.

Good deal! We used to book overnight flights when traveling to Germany to sleep on the flight. So cooped up and stir crazy on planes.

I guess it sounds like, depending on what time you depart from The States, it'll be an easier adjustment than having to simply stay up later when coming back from Europe though. That time difference!

Not bad! I'm sure it will be an exciting experience!

If you're lucky you'll get a red eye out of detroit, land in LA in the morning and leave before 10am, getting you there about midnight the next day 5-8pm JST.

You'll sleep through even the plane crash

4 out of 5 of Josiah's bus crash victims would recommend Gravol to their friends!

At least one year.

Is the HR at the company helping you relocate?

Several things I recommend as an expat:
1. Have a contract that specifies what relocation costs -if any- the company will be paying for
2. Try to get in the contract financial assistance with taxes, both for Japan and US
3. See if there is an official (state sponsored) international community that you can join. Where you have the ability to get advice on visa types, intergration questions, and basic questions like "how to set-up and pay my electric bill?" (DK you can pay monthly, bi-yearly, yearly, etc but default is yearly).

I have a lot more suggestions but having a precise contract and getting involved in a community, I think, is essential.
