I have grown extremely weary of architects saying "delineate" all the time. it's starting to make me think when they get their degree the guy pulls them aside and says "If all else fails just say 'delineate' a bunch, it'll make dummies think you're smart!"

am I on to something here z?

or skull do those jackwagons say it all the time over there too? or is this a regional meneace?

It may be regional, but no offense to Z, I am questiong alot of these "architects" and their degrees...

I am still upset they would not pass my Caulk submittal used at the back of kitchen countertops meeting the wall, due to it being standard interior caulking and they want exterior grade...ITS A *** EXISTING BUILDING GETTING REHABILITATED WHILE OCCUPIED!!!!! /flips countertop on their head

Umm...no not heard them say delineate, but I do see them just point out to ***in prior emails and attach it all then to give an answer directly. This one project has 900+ RFIs....like how do you design a building THAT BAD?!?!?!

I guess I don't understand how you can question someones degree or capability for wanting a different quality of product. Unless said product will cause some kind of issue (other than you being annoyed).

Over kill really. The caulking they wanted was for exterior use where water/moisture is and can be on it way more.

Raining on the outside of a building and not raining in the kitchen. U'd have to be really special to make it rain in the kitchen and get past the appropriate level of caulk, and if you did, you'd have your own special other problems to deal with.

This matters for cost of the tubes of caulking budgeted. Technically they did have the more expensive one specified, but most architects and common sensed people will listen to reason and be like "hey you're right" plus many architects copy n paste the Specs (I see it happen Z, sorry) so it is a guessing game sometimes.

So basically this is all about cost? So technically even though they originally specified what they wanted and asked for it again you're just upset that they did not acquiesce and do what you wanted them to do because it cuts into your budget even though you should have budgeted for it in the first place?

I still don't see this as a reason to question their intelligence.

Edit: It's *** like you that cause me so much more work. Cutting corners to save a couple bucks then I have to deal with 8 years of CD claims coming in and all the headaches that ensue.

None taken. Used to it by now.

I know that some have been skimping and employing more staff that simply drafts rather than those who have four/five year degree. Then again, I've noticed a lot of dependency on tech rather than being more hand-on (I'm not a fan of hand-drafting either) that, in my opinion, makes people a tad more lazy minded. IDK. I haven't been overly in awe of the talent of interns during the summer.

If it's a rehab, how many recalcs do you really need for each unit? Aren't they identical? The SE and/or ARCH should shored up the structural problems, if any, before you were even in there. That's dangerous. Who's requesting RFIs after the fact, anyway? Are you sure it's not the client/s and/or investor/s?

EDIT: God! I'm so TIRED!

Fault does ly with us for not having correct budget for that, BUT its the wrong thing. Like how they wanted to use metal frames within the units for the doors instead of using the traditional wood framed prehung doors within units. We DID price that correctly and then told them they were crazy and showed them $26k savings to go to wood, after having to be told IN PERSON WHY metal frame doors would not work.

Lakshmi.Flavin said: »

I do go too far there, especially based on that incident I said, specifically because we errored on the side of logic and reason, not at their whims. Industry practice is that if there are two options, and one is more expensive, during the budget/pricing time, we are to use the more expensive and work it out later. We did that with the stupid metal framed doors, but not caulking. Mind you the loss was very minimal, like 2k max. But the principal, the principal! Like the principal of finding fault in my logic.

Lest we forget the Endless Waltz of hatred in this industry.

Contractors hate Architects. They hate Owners. Owners hate Contractors. I am just the sum of my existence for the last 10 years and being frustrated with them.

Also and Architects 10 years ago were better than they are now. /conjures my old and curmudgeon memory. XD

Ohhhh that 900+ RFI one I should give SOME credit to. It is a like existing 17 story poured concrete gutted to the slabs, and then adding 4 levels at the side for low rise while rehabbing the highrise. Ohhh and they pour a 3 story below grade garage next to high rise too. WOOOOO BOY. I will see if I can find you pictures of this. But this is a different building than the metal framed interior doors and caulking one.

Caitsith.Zahrah said: »

The subs are asking so many coordination questions and additional information that the drawings were lacking, when we all signed contracts.

That own owner/group, from TX oddly, is partially to blame.

Once one of you contractors actually completes a job on budget without changing everything after everything has already been set and completes the job in the scheduled amount of time I might start to see you guys differently.

How could you point the finger away from yourself? It would be more like... hey guys lets all get together in one group so I can point this giant finger at all of us. Also, the cop out "well don't blame me because everyone else does it too" is the biggest bunch of ***.

Typically we do. Additional charges are not just for "cause we feel like it" usually from some bit of information missed and when clarified, changes the ball game.

Lakshmi.Flavin said: »

I really would LOVE the Owner and Architect to finish the drawings BEFORE we start working on them, instead of the design as you go hard on the industry has had for past few years.

Lakshmi.Flavin said: »

I wish I could rebut this but I can't due to scheduling is in the GCs and I am but a weee lil Sub.

Lakshmi.Flavin said: »

Actually we are seeing more cut throat and backstabbing happening tween contractors and subs. Owner goes to GC with prob. GC passes it to Sub and says *** you do it for free.

The part where the hate cycle and everyone hates on others and passes blame? I think a lot of people have been burned lately to feel like being generous as of lately. (wow my typing sucks, thank you spell check)

We'd be making good bucks by getting you to buy the policy then having you do your job correctly so the policy never triggers coverage. Every time is does it's taking money out of a carrier's pocket to either defend or indemnify you. CD claims never really seem to end either.

I call out of habit/courtesy/confirmation that they've received updated specs/plans, because I did intern with a GC in college because of slim pickin's, and you build a better rapport with your usuals. You're right that e-mails can be ineffective, but at their worst, they're very impersonal. Then again, if you're at a bigger firm, I'm sure you just don't give a flying ***.

Paper trails ftw! Doing stuff only by phone is silly. Even after some calls I draw something up and send it to the person I was talking to to confirm that is what we discussed. Makes it a lot harder to refute when you have everything in writing.

Edit: If someone sends you emails and you don't get around to it because you'd just rather have them call you then it's on you too at that point.
