First Dark Souls II details from EDGE
Posted By: Valay December 15th, 2012

The first Dark Souls II details have emerged from EDGE. Subscribers have started to receive their issues, and a ton of information has already been transcribed from the magazine.

Read on below for a comprehensive summary of content from EDGE’s article.

- Edge says they were shown a 10 minute playthrough of Dark Souls 2, and it is a huge step forward graphically. It looks on par with Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313 in terms of “next-gen”-ness, or so they claim.

- Miyazaki is not working on the development of Dark Souls 2. He is not a director or producer, and is merely a “supervisor”.

- Even as a supervisor, he isn’t making any development decisions. He only tried to reinforce the team’s commitment to releasing things on time, because of the bad experience they had with the patches in Dark Souls, and he also recommended the return to server-based gameplay ala Demon’s Souls.

- The new directors, Tomohiro Shibuya and Yui Tanimura, are indeed the From Software staff who previously directed the Another Century’s Episode series. The decision to have the two directors replace Miyazaki was a company decision made by both From Software and Namco Bandai Games to help move the series forward in a fresh direction.

- Miyazaki is working full time on directing a new game. He will not disclose if it is a new IP or a sequel to something else.

- Darks Souls 2 will be a direct sequel, and have an open world of about the same size, but more dense with content.

- It does not take place on Lordran. The name of the world is the key of the story, they will reveal it at a later date.

- One thing Shibuya wants to enhance is the action in the game. He feels that he can contribute because of his experience working on action games in the past.

- Shibuya says he wants to make things like the Covenant system clearer and more accessible, and he wants to make the story and messaging less subtle.

- He promises there will still be “hidden” elements in the story and world which can be missed.

- Development started in September last year, and was done in parallel with some of the Dark Souls patches and DLC content.

- The game is 25% complete, and the team is substantially larger than Dark Souls. The world creation internal staff for the sequel is nearly double that of the first game.

- The game might not make it for 2013.

-This the article source for the infamous “we want the skyrim audience” quote. To be perfectly clear, even though this was already known, this quote is from the writers of the article and not From Software.

-Huge leap in graphical quality. The game is compared to Watch Dogs and Star Wars 1313. Dynamic lighting and smoother animations all around.

-Hidetake Miyazaki, the director for Dark/Demon’s souls, will not be directing the game and will only be lightly involved in the production. To be perfectly honest it basically seems like his name is there to be there- his involvement is mostly about getting the project started and occasionally checking in on it.

-The unknown nature of the games came from Miyazaki’s interest in western fantasy/mythology and his relative inability to read the English text as a child, leaving him to fill in the blanks.

-Miyazaki was disappointed about having to patch Dark Souls, saying that they pushed the game out without being 100% complete. Dark Souls II will be complete when it launches.

-Server based PVP is back (yay!)

-The information about the directors for the game is worrying. Information is unclear whether or not Miyazaki willingly stepped down from the director’s chair. Namco calls is a “company decision” and has this disturbing anecdote to share:

“For the IP to evolve and provide a new experience within the Dark Souls world the new wind from directors Shibuya and Tanimura is key to providing players with a brand new Dark Souls experience. In order to maintain expectations and satisfaction and the rewards players experience this was the time to bring in new characteristics and tastes of the directors for the series to continue evolving.”

That **** sounds worrying to me. I could just be paranoid since this is one of the last bastions of hardcore gaming being released, but it sounds too much like PR bull ****.

-Miyazaki is working on a new game he can’t talk about.

-Miyazaki is disappointed he doesn’t have a greater role in Dark Souls II

-The Graphics are shockingly close to the trailer’s quality

-According to Shibuya, one of the co-directors, the player’s ability to parse meaning from subtle hints or clues will determine the difficulty of the game and the challenges that are there to experience.

-The map is roughly the same size, but has more content and more “areas of interest”.

-The notion that Dark Souls needs to evolve was “common”. Edge says not to expect a minor update.

-In designing map areas, the main concept was to create areas that had not been in either game.

-Talks of implementing a system that will let you reveal the clues you’ve learned over the course of the game (wut?)

-Shibuya talks about “limiting players options for the early portion of the game, making it simpler to understand new concepts. Then, after a certain amount of time has elapsed, they will suddenly experience the true dark souls experience”.

Magazine Scans

From everything I have read here, I really hope they don't turn this into some Devil may cry/action based title... I really hope they keep to the basic overlying theme of the game, and not turn it into JP showtoons. As I said I hope they keep the over all "feel" and "lore" true. The overall premise of the game is astounding, as well as beautiful. Changing this would ruin the experience for me.

TL;DR don't fix what isn't broke.

The company feels it needs fixed so more people play their games. That is the bottom line here, not about what the fans believe the game to be.

For people who claim that you must stick with a series/company to be a fan, that is not the case.

I have loved the FF series since I was a lil girl playing the first few with my father many years ago. These stories have been with me throughout my life, and I have loved every single one of them (to a point) until the PS2 era.

You can love a series, a franchise, and still be disappointed with the direction it is going in. If a company feels it needs to change directions to survive, that is their choice to make. They have the right to do that, but Dark Souls II will not be the same as the previous two souls games for obvious reasons.

I'm not saying the games SE created since PS2 was released are bad (some really are), but they are different. I don't know exactly why they felt they needed to change the direction they've been going in over the years, their stock started to skyrocket once FF8 was released, multiplying their stock 4-5 times. So why the need to change directions? I don't understand, and their stock has now fallen to bellow where the stock was when FF8 was released.

All of that hard work put into the franchise was wasted because they felt the need to change directions. Was it an attempt to make their games more appealing to the masses so people would buy their games? Is that the reason why they've made a shift and started using girl heros?

I don't know what SE is trying to accomplish, but they have really hurt themselves over the past 10 years.

From Software and Namco Bandai Games are trying to do the same thing with one of the only major hits they've had recently. I feel that they will destroy the souls franchise and burn it into the ground, destroying Hidetake Miyazaki's image and creation for the desire of more money. I find it to be incredibly sad, but at this point we really know nothing about the game other than it will be different.

It wasn't really broken to begin with, I find no reason that they had to try to fix it. They could have made some minor adjustments to the system and the fans wouldn't be this upset right now, but they've changed so much.

It no longer is a souls game, it is a completely new game. It might be a good game, but it isn't going to be the same as demon's souls or dark souls. I fear that we won't get damaged as much, probably to the point where we can use dual swords or something without fear of getting hit.

I'm just scared of what they will do to the series.

Same.

Mind, I've enjoyed all the currentish Final Fantasy games just as much or even more than any of the previous titles, but that's a matter of personal tastes. I can't argue that my tastes mean much compared to hard facts about their impact on the company though.

I'd personally use Silent Hill as my example for amazing series that went to ***when new things were tried. Something I've been fairly vocal about numerous times in Random Thoughts. <_<

Looks like you got summoned into NG+ or so!

As for my news, I know it's super late since I've only been playing periodically but I beat the DLC! NG+ since that's where my main character was, 0 reading up on fights etc until they were beaten, and ended up like

Sanctuary Guardian: 1/1
Artorias: 1/2
Manus: 1/12 or so (1/1 after the Ps3 patch when his projectiles became visible again but not gonna lie, found this fight very challenging)
Kalameet: 1/1

So much fun. This game is honestly too addictive though ... I've done everything difficult that is in my path to getting Platinum (just need Bed of Chaos/Gwyn/Sif => Anor Londo NG++) and yet I'm already thinking of making alternative characters to PvP etc on. UGH.

As for Dark Souls II, I'd love a more streamlined multiplayer experience. Allow us to just select an area to PvP or Co-op in from a list and not make us run there etc - just make multiplayer play less inconvenient in general.

Speaking of addiction, I finally convinced my best friend to play this game. She kept saying it was lame and not a traditional rpg like she likes, but now she is hooked! Glad I have a rl person to talk about the lore with lol.

I'm kiiiiiiiiiiinda tempted to get Dark Souls for PC, now that I have a pretty decent one, so I can record stuff for this thread.

And to take part in more of BarneezyJones' fight clubs.

Both at the same time, even.

...I could also just get a TV to PC recording device too I suppose. Haupauge HD PVR seems very popular among YouTubers.

I own both the PS3 and PC versions of the game (yeah, addicted, sorry T_T).

At the moment, playing on the PC just isnt fun. 20% of the people you encounter are invincible, have unlimited casts and have 99 stats in everything at level 1. Unless they find a way to weed out the players using trainers and cheats, just stick to the PS3 version. It's perfect anyway.

I've only played the Xbox 360 version. Absolutely loved it. Steep learning curve but once you get it down the game is weak sauce. Will still kick you in the nuts if you don't pay attention! Like I did the other night... Kicked off a cliff, goodbye 297k souls >.<

Been searching for Demon Souls (recently bought a PS3 for all the exclusive RPG's) & I heard Demon Souls was more difficult than Dark so that piqued my interest. No joy yet though :(

Order it online from Gamestop. It's like $15-$20 and they'll deliver it to you.

Also, it's not harder imo. The black phantom versions of NPCs are certainly harder than NPC invasions in Dark Souls, but other than that... I had some issues initially because I was unfamiliar with the enemies, but once I figured it out I had no issues.

Valley of Defilement is harder (or rather, more annoying) than Blight Town is.

Sweet will try that.

Yeah the npc invaders in Dark were a joke.
More annoying than Blight Town!? I find that hard to believe lol
Biggest problem I had with that place was the shockingly bad frame rate... & the lil *** with the blow darts!

The Defilement swamp is significantly larger than the one in Blight Town. There's no Rusted Iron Ring. And you can't roll while in the swamp. At all. It's like trying to roll under the effects of Tranquil Walk of Peace. And every enemy down there can run at full speed. Then there are a few enemies that have 'poise' for lack of a better term and hit like an absolute truck and are almost guaranteed to beak your guard in a single hit.
