My dad walked in on me once. He opened the door, got halfway through my name before realizing what was going on, turned around, shut the door, and walked away. Never spoke of it to this day.
I didn't share for that reason, Sev. It's just an interesting view on parenting. Anyone who thinks that their teens aren't experimenting at that age are deluded. Why not keep it in a controlled environment?
i agree that the view is worth sharing. i guess we just look at it and see different things. as a former journalist, it's hard for me not to look at an article that is journalistically poor, even if it does raise interesting points, and get up on my cranky old man soapbox about the decline of the media :(
As a former journo, do you not think it's a good idea to be airing stories that promote a safer/smarter world for future generations? Certainly beats a lot of other sensationalist filler stories they could be putting there. Like my local news station tonight was obviously short on stories... They showed a youtube video of a car in Russia that was doing a stupid overtaking maneuver and almost crashed into a few cars. Seriously Channel Ten, wtf?
a journalist should document impartially, not try to make policy
they didn't get that shout out in the constitution so that they could advance their own agenda, but so they could act as the fourth estate they were meant to be
that holds true even when i happen to agree with the agenda they promote
Okay, that makes a lot of sense, but do you really classify talk shows as journalism? (not sure if that's a talk show or not, didn't look overly serious/newsy)
I guess this would work out as a parenting technique.
At least until they determine that those parents most ok with this also happen to be those most likely to make video recordings of it and sell it on the internet. :p
Since I don't have children, I can't really say for sure what I would do. But it seems like it would be safer, not only because the environment itself is safer but because if the teen had questions/concerns, they'd be more comfortable asking their mom or dad.
Knowing that my parents would not understand or feel compassionate about such things, as a teen I would never have asked them anything sex-related. Ever. I'd rather hear it from eavesdropping outside the boys' locker room or reading gossip magazines. How much more comfortable and well-informed must kids be who have parents who understand and are compassionate!
I'm sorry, Leila.
My parents weren't quite as bad. I did have a lot of misguided notions about sex because of their inability to communicate with me about the subject.
On the other hand, my older brother was able to get away with a lot more than I was. He was caught having sex by my parents multiple times, but my father always smirked about it. There were times that he would even be congratulated by my dad. I know that if I was ever caught doing the same, my *** would be grass.
My high school sweetheart and I were together for a good four years and one of the boyfriends I had in college were together for five. Whenever they stayed at my parent's home we would have to stay in separate bedrooms, but the rules were very different for my brother. His bedroom was basically a brothel from the time that he hit his teens until he was finally in a relationship with the woman that he ended up marrying.
I moved in w/ my uncle (from the previous story) when I was 15, lol. Crazy as *** living w/ him.
I lived w/ him for 1 week and it was "Why don't you have one of these little high school *** up in your room? There should be a trail like a slug leading all the way to your door"

This happened to me but it was my Mum, she litterally just said "I'm going shopping and I don't have a key so listen for the door." She didn't make a big deal of it at all.
In general my parents were always been fine with it through out my teens, in fact I think I was was more worried about my parents hearing it than anything because I knew it would be uncomfortable for them. My parents always made sure I knew about what could happen then let me make my own mistakes and if anything the mistakes I almost made were what made me responsible about it. I think if overly strict rules had been applied then for me at least it would have lead to curiosity and irresponsibility which I know lead to very bad mistakes amoung people I knew who environments which were strict over sex.
in mexican house holds you never speak of sex ever lol parents never gave us the talk or anything lol if i have a guy friend over and she knows he has a long time gf, i have to have my door open lol the *** you thinking?! lol so embarrassing >_> if i have kids no boys over ever if they are girls, if they are boys use a condom and i dont wanna hear it :3

My parents never gave me the talk either, lol. They were embarrassed by it, I think. They gave me a book that outlined the egg and sperm business, but decided to let me figure everything else out on my own or by listening to classmates or in sex ed.
lol my mom tried once but i dont think anyone was virgin anymore lol she just said "as long as u guys love each other its ok" im like dont u mean married?! then she said oh yeah that too
I can't stand that double standard with boys and girls >_> If it's your daughter, can't ever have guys over, and if it's your son, he better be *** the ***out of any girl that moves or he's a pussy ***.

edit:
Idk if he thinks that now. I wouldn't be surprised if he'd do something like that, but it's still pretty new to him atm.
My uncle got caught when he was 15 screwing this girl at her house.
Their parents locked him in and called his dad. His dad drove out there and was like
"ok, what did he do?"
"He was in here messing with our daughter"
"Did he break in?"
"No"
"Then you need to tell that little *** to close her legs and stop letting guys in your house"
Lol my uncle said his and everyone else jaws just dropped.
Then he was like
"Pablo, how did you get here"
"I rode my bike"
"K you can ride that ***home then, can't believe I got woke up from my sleep for this ***"
OMR OMR OMR OMR OMR I LOVE THIS SO MUCH! (ahem sorry for the caps, I just love it that much)
When I was pregnant with my eldest (found out when I was 15, had her when I was 16) I was so afraid to tell my Pappy (grandpa) about it that he didn't know until the day she was born (at least I didn't think he did)...then he showed up at the hospital out of the blue and said to me
"All right pipsqueak. What's this I hear about a baby?"
"Right here Pappy..."
"Well, it looks like you passed on some good genes there, don't forget to do it again, I want 4 more just like her."
I was like..."uhhhh...ohhhh kayyyy..."
"By the way, the father is dead, I buried him at the dump, no one will find him, but if they do, you'll probably be a suspect. Just letting you know. Love you pipsqueak."
Then he walked out.
My mom caught wind of the visit and I thought she was gonna have a heart attack because apparently when he found out she was pregnant with ME he said exactly the same thing to her (and she ended up having 4 kids) and she didn't approve.
It's been over 14 years since that day and my Pappy is gone now but the fact that he didn't kill me makes me love him so much more <3

Hi2umydad.
Me too! My brother could get away with murder, but I was supposed to be chaste and virginal.
I feel like parents who allow this nonsense are extremely irresponsible, and overly eager to free themselves of their own responsibility as parents

*** shaming, double standards, and irresponsible adults all in one place, aborable

why's that?
because "oh it's safer and cleaner here, go at it kids!" is a terrible excuse for parenting
You'd prefer them to lie to you and do it somewhere where they're not safe?
I'd prefer they be encouraged to not do it at all if they're so stupid and unaware of the consequences of their actions that they won't use birth control properly when they're not in their nice cozy beds at home with the parents in the living room

They're just going to find some where else to do it anyway. Also the parents would probably get more respect and understanding from the teens which make it easier to explain safe sex etc.

Have you never been a teenager? lol
Peer pressure and recklessness are kinda the main things that rule your mind.
