Was in the 9th grade in Fayetteville, NC. It was exam week and we were all held in our 3rd period class (which was french class for me) essentially on lock down for some unknown reason and then the Principal came over the speaker thing. Told us to all turn the tv onto the news and that she wanted us all "to take a moment of silence for what is happening right now in our country"

Oh wow, Fayetteville. Curious, were you forced to go to E. E. Smith too? Ahhh, memories.

I lived in Fort Campbell, KY when the attacks occurred, waiting for a bus to school that was about an hour late. Eventually my mom came out and told me what happened, so I skipped school that day. (It was kinda cool, there were tanks and AA vehicles parked out near our school IIRC.) Our family was sent to Fort Bragg the same year. My dad was sent to Afghanistan shortly afterwards. I was the oldest at 12, so I remember how hard it was on my family with my dad gone and my mom speaking little English. As if moving to a new place with no friends wasn't bad enough!

My dad was in the 101st and the 82nd Airborne, so yeah, with those airfields nearby, the sound of helicopters and all kinds of aircraft got really mind-numbing. It was definitely weird when the windows rattled as something flew over us. Not to mention the sirens. The lines at the gates for ID checks drove us nuts, we decided never to leave the base for sanity's sake.

No, seriously. The towers were hit at like 9am and I'm in San Diego, and there was no chance I was gunna be up at 6am at 21 years old.

My dad woke me up, who I was staying with at the time, and I remember bleary-eyed stumbling into the living room to just kinda watch in numb shock as the first tower came down.

It was surreal because I had been in Manhattan not two weeks before, and had dinner at Windows on the World at the top of the WTC for a birthday present.

Wow! That is just...Wow! Have you read through some of the posts by the residence of NYC yet? Incredible!

I know this is the JFK moment of our time, and it's so fascinating to know what everyone was going through during their every day lives when this happened. I don't know how many responses have been on here so far, but the enormity of it is so astounding!

On a side note, you and Chaosx are the same age!

That would be so odd, to see a place you had just been in recently be destroyed. I can't imagine how it must have been for New York natives either, to have them there one day and gone the next. Not seeing them anymore every day. I just can't even imagine.

Thank God I personally didn't know anyone who perished on 9/11 but there was a lady who worked part time at my job and unfortunately her husband happened to be one of the chefs who worked at that same restaurant.

Yeah quite a few of my friend's parents worked in NY/in/around/at the towers. Thankfully no one from my town was hurt that day.

I guess being a Texan living on the Gulf Coast, this has just become habit for me.. The destruction is nothing, I'm not saying it wasn't a travesty, but it was just a few buildings, even a moderate hurricane tears everything up for countless miles, before weakening to just tearing down branches/thinner/weaker trees and producing a lot of wind and rain. People even just an hour or two north of me experience a completely different storm.

After major storms, entire cities and towns will be locked down, not letting anyone in.. After Ike, Galveston, the entire city, was locked down to even residents for a couple of weeks, that's just the devastation it brings, and when they do finally clean it up enough to let you back in, it's still not completely clean, far from it, there are downed power lines, boats sitting hundreds of yards inland, trees blocking entire lanes of traffic, parts of lesser buildings (mostly from corrugated steel sheets from warehouses and the like) spread all over the place, including the road, in a single word, it's chaos.

In short, property devastation just really doesn't bother me anymore, admittedly I've never witnessed the aftermath of a sky scraper collapse, but I have seen total devastation, I've seen the area I live in brought to utter wreckage, and I come back to my small town and see the destruction, but that's not the end of it, I know, even up to 100's of miles away, everyone else is seeing the same thing I am...

I don't know if this is faked, or if it's even appropriate (if it's not, I'm sorry) but this always gave me chills WARNING, ASSUMING THE VIDEO IS REAL, IT'S PROBABLY SOMETHING YOU WILL NEVER FORGET. Don't watch it if you're faint of heart or are disturbed easily, it's not an easy thing to just hear and then forget.

I'm a hugely empathic person, it's not hard for me to put myself in his shoes, and feel the stomach churning dread he must've felt right as everything fell out from under him.

hi lol <3

You are probably right, Slip, for someone who was used to it, the destruction of the buildings themselves might not have been a huge deal. (Of course, the loss of life inside the buildings as well as the planes and the health complications from the debris and smoke afterwards is something I hope none of us ever gets used to.) I was just raised in such a set environment, where buildings were not torn down even if they were not used, that buildings tend to seem permanent for me. I know it's not true, buildings are indeed changeable. I just haven't seen it often in my lifetime.

Over the years since the tragedy whenever I'm downtown I make it a habit of stopping off at the church that miraculous managed to avoid the destruction even though it's basically in the shadow of the Twin Towers just to say a prayer and pay my respects to those who died that day and to all the emergency first responders whose valiant efforts not only make me proud to be an American but a New Yorker.

Even now with all the rebuilding going on there's something solemn about that area whenever walking around it seems like everyone is in a mood of silent reflection as they tread on what's now considered sacred grounds. To most of the world that area was known as Ground Zero but to us it will always be known as Ground Hero!

I was in Basic Training for the Army when it happened....
The drill sergeants had left the room for a couple minutes, then they came back and turned on the tv to CNN. Utter silence from all of us trainees for a few moments. Then the drills asked if anyone of us wanted out of the army and to stand up if we did. I think 1 or 2 people did, but those of whom I was sitting next to and I sat there. As one of them put it "This is what we signed up for, to keep s*** like that from happening.".

Almost a decade later, and I still run those words through my head. I'm no longer in the service due to medical reasons, but my husband is a soldier, and I haven't given him any flack about it.

I could see that being a real call. As soon as the first tower was hit the phone lines were *** up across the whole area. But if he got through to 911 i guess it's possible. I don't know which is worse, the anticipation before the fall or the people who had to jump to avoid dying in the fire.

My father just returned from New York (our old home) today, and he got a bunch of pictures... I don't think he really felt anything from it, I guess it was just shock or something. He showed me that they're building new towers now.

Btw that video ... I shouldn't have even watched it, but I couldn't resist, it made me stop for a minute..
