Balthier all the way, though it would be fair just to call him Han Solo with a better looking, but more annoying-sounding indentured servant.
Honorable mention: Judge Gabronth, Steiner and Vivi (Must be together though), and, I know it's all hip and cool to hate on FF7 nowadays, but I really liked the fact that Cloud was nothing but a poser for like 3/5ths of the game. So I'll toss him in there too.

I will admit I liked the part in space and the whole playing of "Eyes on Me" after clearing the Ragnarok of the Propagators. Would of said Tidus but how he always recycled the "I uhh got too close to Sin and uhh the toxins...yeah" and at times really annoyed me. Honourable mentions to Kain, Balthier and Auron. Oh I know, I was just saying. Most people call Squall emo and I've never understood why.

Squall was a horribly annoying character throughout most of FF8. He basically tells Rinoa to *** off like 10 times and she still clings to him for no apparent reason. None of the characters made any sense to me in FFVIII. I replayed in twice just to see if maybe I missed something, but nope. The characters just don't work at all. I don't think Squall is emo, he's just not believable and pretty much a cloud replica. I'm tempted to play it again after writing this to see if I missed something again because I know a lot of people love squall. I just don't understand why he acts the way he does. More back-story would be good I guess.
My favorite character would probably be Zidaine. I gotta respect him for the "you're not alone" scene. My personal favorite scene in any FF.  This scene always gives me chills. Shiva has been my favorite summon since FFV, and was the reason I chose my server... I liked Zidane and all, but I could never get passed the fact that he looks like Martha Stewart. He probably used the most awesome weapon-type in FF history though, Twinblade Darth Maul style! (Cause who the *** used daggers except for Ability learning or the first 2hrs of the game?, 3 if you stole the Mage Masher in the first fight)
