Lot of apps for the TVs have built in malware that allows the app developer to sell your TV as a proxy node. You run the app, some random is paying a residential proxy provider to route their illegal activities or web scraping through your TV and you aren't even told it's happening. From what I can tell, it's not really a problem. It's possible I'm misunderstanding and they're also cracking down on people using proxies, but that's not how I read it.

Edit: NVM, I guess that's not what people are upset about. They were advertising McAfee through their monitors driver update process. Gross.

I miss the days when TVs were just TVs for displaying content. I got a new one a few months ago and I had to spend way too much time disabling ***I didn't want, like channels and other trash that just came with it apparently and randomly start playing. It still renders ads all the time, which I find really annoying.

It also just defaults to running one of their shitty movie channels and there is no way to turn it off or delete it. I had a moment with that when I first connected the TV and turned it on, a full blown sex scene was on the TV while my 7 y/o and 3 y/o were watching me set it up and there wasn't a clear way to turn it off. The only way to prevent it happening again was to enable parental lock but it still sometimes just plays crap I didn't request.

As I get older, I'm getting more and more to the point I just buy old ***, starting with cars.

What tv was this that randomly plays porn?? Im in the market for a new tv and I want to know what not to buy.

You see, when a TV manufacturer goes "Hey, wouldn't you like to connect your Netflix/Other Streaming Service to your TV straight away? Doesn't that sound fine and dandy?" what they are actually saying is "I will spam your eyeballs full of ads and malware if you are dumb enough to hook this thing up to the Internet you numb nuts".

Just. Don't. Do. It.

Buy yourselves a streaming dongle, Google Chrome based, and plug it into anywhere you want to stream stuff to.

Google Chrome isn't perfect, but at least it won't ream your rear end sans lubrication.

That is too much effort for me... I just want to get in and to what I want to see. I dont wanna go thru a separate app or chrome to get to my subscription services. The only ads I see are usually from some subs that force them even if you are premium member, like DisNEY+ and sometimes Netflix. They at least show you trailers for other movies/shows within the platform and let you click to skip.

I've never had and never will have a streaming subscription. I setup Kodi years ago, and use its app on my phone as a remote.
