Kinda related; I want proper English subs for the Japanese dialogue in SE games instead of only having the option of using localization dubtitles. I couldn't stand FF7R for 15 min thanks to this.

Don't think there's a LLM-based translation service that both provides an API and is free/unauthed. At the very least, it's likely an addon would require the user to create an account with the service it's based on and set up authentication in the addon to be able to do sufficient queries. Most likely, they'd also have to fund the account and pay the LLM provider.

There are applications for example for image generation that are based on one of the smaller LLM libraries. Not sure if you have to create a account but afaik it's a one time payment, no monthly fees and your queries are processed on your lokal machine.

Takes quite a while to generate a image in particular without a RTX card and the results are often pretty disappointing. I think installation size of that library is around 4 or 8 GB.

Afaik the huge scrapped data sets are opensource so anyone could grab it and build a app around it?

I can think of at least 2 more reasons that play into this.

PS2 limitations

Asian version often has Japanese VA with regional localized text unless it's western game. Afaik FF7R Asian release on PSN is Korean/Chinese sub + English or Japanese VA. If you start a "no Japanese VA, no buy" campaign like Asians do, then maybe you'll get that too.

English version often has English dub because there is significant amount of English users who prefer listening to dialogue instead of reading text. So the result just reflects English user's preference.

My issue doesn't lie there. All of SE's English version releases of their Japanese-developed games that I've played in the past ~10 years included dual Japanese + English VA options. They perhaps acknowledged that many English-speaking fans are into anime & would appreciate an option to play in the original Japanese dub. What I'm asking for is having properly-translated subs in English (or even Arabic, but that seems pretty unlikely) instead of the localization dubtitles, since they take so many liberties with the English localization. I usually tolerate it better than some of my friends, but it creates unbearable dissonance in some cases.

Then there is this Spanish dude who was complaining on Youtube that their region's releases come with only English VA and Spanish subs that are based on the original JP dialogue, creating the same problem. They have to rely on the South American version's subs to avoid the jarring experience, because the SA subs are based on the English localization!
