Ticket 4793: "My computer restarted itself at 7:45 this morning, can you make that not happen?"
I show up, first thing I ask "There were some Windows Updates this morning, was that what came up when your computer restarted?"
Teacher: "No, it shut off completely I had to turn it back on. It did this yesterday too."
Me: "Okay..." Start troubleshooting... I look at the event log. I see at 7:10 AM the computer booted, but failed to install a Flash Player update, then 30 minutes later the system had an unexpected loss of power. I look back to the day before and the same pattern. I do find it strange that it is unexpected loss of power and not unexpected shutdown.
*20 minutes later*
Teacher walks up: "Any luck?"
Me: "Well I see one failed installation, but I can't wrap my head around why a failed group policy install would cause the system to shutdown like that."
Teacher: "Yeah sounds weird. Hey you don't think it has anything to do with me kicking the power cable out of the back of it this morning, do you?"
Me: areyoukiddingmeface.jpg "What time did that happen?"
Teacher: "About the time it started saying it needed to restart for updates, I kicked it out but then when I turned it back on it didn't say it needed updates so I think it is ok. Is it going to be ready in the next 10 minutes?"
Me: Straight face, rage of a thousand planets boiling beneath my skin, begin CHKDSK...
