Today was a staff development day in the district I was working for. Not 1 hour into the day I heard two teachers in a nearby room discussing the recent changes that would require them to log certain numbers of hours for training. Already one teacher was bragging about how she found a way to scam the system, because she found certain classes that if taken electronically would count towards 2 areas of development as she holds some sort of supplemental language certification. She could take a 3 hour course and count it as 6 and she was proud of finding a way to do less work to improve herself as an educator. The other teacher did not scold her for this, or point out that the requirement was set in place to better their ability to educate children. He just pointed out how jealous he was, because this loophole would not work for him.
What really rustles me about this is how this evening I come home to Facebook and see three of four people posting little propaganda videos about how teachers in the US don't get respect, how they don't get paid enough, how they don't have access to technology and tools to help them teach.
I'm sorry... but you are literally Facebook friends with a teacher I know who REFUSED to let me show her how to attach a photo to an email and told me to just do it for her.
I had very little sympathy for teachers before, and every day I feel like I lose more and more.
