19 and 29% on car loans should be illegal, wow.

The highest I ever actually saw when looking at a dealership's data was 49% and that was in Tennessee where there are basically no regulations.

Highest legal interest rate is 50% in all states.

That's annual interest not compounded.

Pretty sure that doesn't apply to everything (it might to BHPH I am not sure). Payday loan companies are still doing crazy ***like 500% or higher.

That's because it's a super-short-term loan.

As long as it's less than 3 months (or expected to be less than 3 months, per the terms of the notes), it's currently unregulated.

Also, I don't know about 500%, I mean, that would be kindof silly to do.

This is a couple years old, but from what I have heard the CFPB hasn't had a lot of luck regulating Payday Loans because of legaleze.

Topic Shift - Did anyone see that video of the woman in the bookstore freaking out about the Paul Sheldon Misery books? At first I thought it was pretty funny, but then I looked into a bit and now it is just dumb.

They take out payday loans because they have to and then many of them get caught in a loop where they take out loans > repay > take out a new loan to repay and it never ends because they have to pay so much more all the time

At the moment, it's not a huge deal because a $1,000 note with a lifespan of 1 month or less usually nets about $50-100 for the note (which, to my understanding, is how much payday loans get from lending).

Even then, I'm showing a 213.84% annual interest rate for a monthly loan of $1,000, payback is $1,100.

I'm not saying it's a problem, I'm saying that the "outrage" is blown out of proportion.

The real issue is being dependent on it.

The thing is that Paul Sheldon is a CHARACTER in the Stephen King novel Misery. In the book Paul Sheldon writes a series of not-actually-existant Misery novels.

Seeing this version it is a little more clear that it is scripted, apparently she is playing a part of a character in the Stephen King novel.

Facebook has a shorter version that just shows the freakout.

Well, that's my opinion on the matter.

Nobody is paying a 200% annual rate annually.

In most, if not nearly all cases, this interest rate is passed off as a fee, which would remove the regulatory constraints of the Feds.

I still say the bigger issue is the dependency on this.

Their very existence is predatory in nature. They really shouldn't even be a thing. People depending upon them is pretty bad, and most of the time if you do, it's because ***'s going wrong in your life -- by your own fault or someone else's is almost irrelevant -- and the last thing you need is someone looking to make ***even worse for you to make a quick buck.

I agree. However, they exist and demanding that they don't will generally hurt people who rely on them than not.

There needs to be a better method to this, and no, I'm not going to say the government needs to be involved. They will more than likely screw it up even further.
