How do game designers and program designers for that matter decide to go to a new version number?
For example, and this may just be foggy memory or it happened while I was not playing, I don't remember there being 2.9 in FFXIV. I remember 2.4 for sure but after that I simply don't recall going to Alley like HOLY DOGSHYTE 2.8 HITS TODAY.
The place I worked was on version 3.xxxx and version 3 was basically when he made the change to Windows... like 15 years ago. They have updates 3 times a week with different version numbers and were on like 3.35XX when I left. Version 4 is apparently going to be the online/website version but since they have no one actually working on that they better think about 3.9999 happening lol.
With video games it is normally
Base version#.Majorpatch #.minor patch#
So for example Diablo III.
2.4.35616
2 means it is on it's 1st exp pack
4 means the 4th major patch since the exp pack
35616 is the # minor patches and bug fixes
