Most animes/mangas with an otaku main, who's kinda socially outcasted or "Different" are poorly received. Welcome to the NHK was very poorly received too, which is why it'll probbaly never get a blu-ray release. I'm also sure Welcome to the NHK was super edited from the manga from the start, like his "Hallucinations" are largely drug induced for examples. (This isn't a spoiler, you find it out on like page 17 of the manga... <_<)

To reiterate clearly, anything thats seen to directly "Attack" Otaku culture, generally ends up poorly received.
