Assuming it's CompTIA, you don't even need to take the class, you just usually get an exam voucher that's worth about the same as the class costs. Anyone can go into a testing center and take the A+ exam.
It does tend to be a required part of a lot of IT programs, though. Well there's that, if you have your A+ you can typically test out of the class with just that certification.
