unless you go the Skin route.

you can unlock champs via IP which are rewarded for playing the game.

occasionally Rito will hand out IP/XP bonuses for free

I don't either but I really should.
Just feels like a waste of money and all the cash shop sounding stuff throws me off.

A majority of things you can purchase with in game currency you earn (IP), but if you're impatient or want something immediately, you're welcome to dish out some cash. LoL is one of the few FTP games I don't mind shelling out a bit of cash here and there for, since it's so much fun and I am growing a love for many of the champions.

can play vs a team of AI or PC
AI has 2 difficulties. tho for a short time, there was a higher difficulty, called Doombots .
