First I thought it was angry birds due to the Red with blue cross' armor looking like a beak.

Then Smash Brothers Insignias.

Then I saw the dates and totally got it.

Broadening at the hit is actually standard for most heavy swords used in slashing attacks. If not then the likely hood of the sword breaking when you make contact with an object is increased. Say a person blocks your swing with a shield the recoil could cause the blade to snap clean off due to the weakness created by not being broadened at the hilt.

The blade on that sword is not only fat be appears to have gold on it as well adding to the weight of it. Hopefully its only gold plating because as far as metals go Gold is actually pretty soft, to the point where your nail can dent and scratch it.

They do, actually. Makes for a better thrust and gives the blade something similar to a curved edge for better cutting capacity as well. Also, it'll shift weight distribution towards the hilt which makes for better handling.

I'd be more concerned about the hilt running up the edge of the blade, personally. <_<

Admittedly the broad base is exaggerated, but well... welcome to the fantasy genre!

I'm more amused by much of the actual edge on that blade being covered with a blob of gold...

swords back then aren't razor sharp. they still cut but its more hacking than slicing

You're still making a cutting edge(sharp or not) into something completely blunt which eliminate most if not all cutting potential.

Nah, what stops a blade from breaking on impact is the fact swords (well, just about every non-katana blade anyway) are surprisingly flexible.

Also, if you really wanted something for chopping/slashing you're going to want the cutting part of the blade to have the most mass. As beautifully demonstrated by the beastly Ghurka Kukri.

Heavier cutting edges bite deeper. Curved edges do as well, more blade per unit of measure.

Medieval swords were actually quite sharp. There wouldn't have been a need to develop chain/plate armor if they weren't. Padded leather jerkins would've sufficed as armor given chain and plate are still quite susceptible to stabbings.
