It's a grim reality, but chances are they never will legitimately care and may not even be there by the end of the year. You can't "give" grades, but you can find incentive to make them earn them even if they are just passing. Case-by-case deal though, different for everyone. Sauce: I was an apathetic student and also worked in the dean's office once I didn't need to stay the entire day due to my credit count. I'm not going to use incentives to con kids into learning in my class like extra credit or candy or whatever. My strategy is to be honest and open with these kids, applying real world application to the stuff I'm teaching them. If they can't find it in themselves to care about the world around them, then that's on them. It's a damn shame, but I can't make those horses drink.
