For two reasons that I know of, 1. if you have excess wax it can pack it in there, and 2. it can damage your ears if you're careless.. Suit yourself though, those little cotton ends are absolutely perfect for scratching at an ear itch that just won't go away, anytime I get an ear itch like that I go straight for a Q-tip.. Just kinda twist it on the spot that itches.

I remember my cousin having the cotton tip falloff/lodged inside of him and having to go to the er to get it out P:
