Although I've lived my whole life in a middle class neighborhood where we have never had a violent crime like a murder or even a home invasion occur (AFAIK) and rarely lock our front door, that certainly effects my view on the topic. The city I used to live in which is a small city but had a killing spree( a friends father got murdered as well as a few young girls who were murdered in the dudes basement), several armed robberies happened on just a street over, my step-moms boss got decapitated with a blunt object, and several shotgun suicides of close family friends.
:/
yeah.
the city I live in now is tame as a kitten and I could leave my door unlocked all the time if I wanted to...but I'm already in the habit of locking everything all the time.

Getting complacent is when you open your self up to serious jeopardy. I stress this for everyone, never assume you're safe anywhere, at any time. You don't have to be paranoid about everyone and everything, but never allow yourself to think that nothing could or would happen.

Bahamut.Zorander said: It's already legal. Very legal to open carry... Depends entirely on the state. It's legal without restriction in 10 states, mostly legal in 15 others, legal only with a special license in 13, not legal except in extenuating circumstances in 7 or so, and almost completely outlawed in a few more.
Just as a topical bump (to even my own page-1 post here on this subject) California now bans open-carry...
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/44843817/ns/us_news-life/
Quote: The Brady Campaign, which sponsored the legislation, said California joins Florida, Illinois, Oklahoma and Texas as the only states to ban the open carry of handguns. It said 33 states, including Pennsylvania, Michigan, Louisiana and Colorado, do no prohibit open carry. Twelve states, including South Carolina, Tennessee, Minnesota and Massachusetts require permits for open carry.

being a rather large and intimidating person, i say no to guns at all because it lessens my chance of avoiding conflict when the drunk midget gets all Napoleonic complex on me at the club and smokes me with a ruger.

All even felons should be able to always carry arms.

I totally read that as "No, I want my size to mean something, I can't pick on the short skinny people without fear of getting shot."
I'm all for guns, I say arm everyone. I never get the arguments against guns anyways. The people who sit there and come up with reasons why ordinary citizens shouldn't be able to carry obviously haven't thought through their arguments very well.. They're usually about as strong as wet toilet paper.. Occasionally one will be about as strong as wet cardboard, but it's still pretty easy to tear right through.
I'm also probably one of the only Texans on this site or in the entire state that doesn't have a gun..

Why should standard citizens ever need guns, period? I for one would would hate to live in a country where I couldn't walk the streets at night, cos of drug runners packing heat, dudes jacking 7-11's, mentally unstable kids shooting up their schools, dude's picking up guns and off-ing themselves cos the reality of life gets too real. I'm over reading/watching all this *** up ***going down in america, they're too easily available and there's nothing good that comes from it, ban that ***.

I have several guns. I am a hunter, and I have handguns that I go to the range and shoot for sport, as well as for home protection. I have a permit that lets me carry concealed if I like. I see no problem with guns, just the idiots that sometimes use them.

Why would you need to carry guns anyways >_>
More people carrying and owning guns = more crazy people shooting randoms
Less guns = less crazy people with guns shooting randoms

Exactly, the idiots with guns will allways be the problem, so the best way is just to ban it, really.

No, not really at all. How often do criminals obey the law.
Outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns.

Ill minded people will be the ones that always break the law. Giving your upstanding citizens the right, and the tools to fight back is what maintains order. Open carry is a huge crime deterrent.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that I assume most of the people here who are in favor of guns have lived or live in a household with guns. Where as, those opposed to guns, probably didn't. Just an assumption...

Do you think that open carry of firearms would be a good or bad thing?
Would armed citizens have been able to reduce the death toll at Columbine? The Killeen Texas Luby's cafeteria massacre? The Virginia Tech shooting? Would armed citizens make crooks think twice about mugging someone?
Would a plethora of firearms result in more road rage shootings? Impulse shootings when tempers flair? Innocent bystanders caught in crossfires? "Friendly Fire" incidents as one armed citizen mistakes the guy shooting the bad guy FOR the bad guy?
Not putting out my thoughts, just wanted to see what y'all would think on about a breakroom discussion we had at work today.
