This video gives quite a good overview of all the starter towns.
You've got
Limsa Lominsa
A town set in a port, A castle towers over the rest of the city. This town seems to be the San d'Oria of XIV. The only difference being that it seems to house a greater number of Roegadyn instead of Elezen.
Gridania
A town set in a forest, Waterfalls and tree-houses seem to be the most common sight here. This town seems to be the Windurst of the game, housing Lalafell and Miq'ote.
Ul'dah
Set in the arid desert, this town seems to be a large and busy city with a heavy Arabic feel. This town seems to be the Bastok of the game, but I'm not sure what Race is common place here.
I'll personally be starting in Ul'dah, I've always had a soft spot for desert cities.
BONUS!
A picture of some high level play. Here you can see the Linkpearl, status effects and a full action bar down the bottom.
Depends I guess what race I am also, because if it follows XI with the starter rings, you might get some bonus item for starting in your races native nation.
Too many sites out there right now are calling FF XIV a direct sequal to FF XI and implying it is simply an upgrade, as if it were some sort of stand-alone expansion pack. Having watched as many videos of people violating their NDAs as I could find, it really does look like an entirely new game, with only a handful of largely aesthetic similarities.

Pretty much. The entire development system is different, the battle system is way different and the quest system is different. It has enough similarities to give you a sense of nostalgia, but the main aspects of the game are completely new.

Those Galka need to get back to the mine.
Also as a side question, what race is everyone going to be?

I'm being a Roegadyn personally.
Roegadyn Hellsguard or Midland Hyur
Lalafell look too weird for me i prefer how ffxi tarus look :( they're cuter
oh and on this note what class u think ur gonna be!?!?
I'm kinda torn at the moment. Recent dat files have found a god-damn gunblade as a weapon, so that makes me want to play that class no matter what it is.
But I also love Martial arts, so I want to be a Pugilist... And I also really want to be a mage so Thaumaturge looks fun
I DON'T KNOW ANYMORE! GUNBLADE HAS RUINED MY MIND!

Pugilist is actually entertaining. Hell, it can pseudo tank early on, lol. Gets a small form of provoke etc. (Taunt) Recently I've been playing around with Lancer and Gladiator. Lancer is pretty beast. Gladiator seems pretty fun as well so far.
