To save on the 6 hours update time from a fresh install I've made a new full update package

This is assuming you have installed from the latest official installer from Square Enix that can be found here:
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/download/media/install_win.html
* http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxi/download/us/FFXISETUP.exe
* http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxi/download/us/FINALFANTASYXI.Data.001
* http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxi/download/us/FINALFANTASYXI.Data.002
* http://gdl.square-enix.com/ffxi/download/us/FINALFANTASYXI.Data.003

Update up to 2018-08-09:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1jVwflKOw2VwWfPRKkmUe_b8hiAp_aCeU
This is using High efficient compression to keep the otherwise >4GB update down to a mere <900MB

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1gaiI8CSH9taJmXcmsta32H6KFqxVRfkC
This is in a simple .zip file at around 1.5GB

I am currently working on integrating the update into the install files to save even more time.

Enjoy

--- edit ---

Please see Kireek's post on page 2
The new installer Square just released is up-to date with current files, so when you install the game from that there will be no update.

It's the best and fastest way to install ffxi right now.

900 MB exe? Put it in a more trustworthy format, there's not an easy way to scan something that size and there's absolutely no reason it needs to be an exe instead of whatever compression you're actually using.

I understand the concern but there is no trustworthy (zip?) format that can do this size.
Without some kind of huge dictionary size or file deduplication, there is no way to span over all the 4GB of data to optimize the compression.
7-zip can get it down to just below 1GB but still not a format everybody can decompress.

The.exe nature is due to most ppl probably not have every kind of decompression tool in their library and .exe make it easier as it gives a default install path as well (same at ffxi default path).
It just a way better way for user experience.

However for the skeptical (Which is sane). The compression tool can be found here
https://encode.ru/threads/2829-RAZOR-strong-LZ-based-archiver
That way you can decompress the file without running it.
It is however not opensource from the creator.

I am not sure what the question is about the 900mb size, so I can't give an answer to that

Everyone should have 7zip, there's no reason for them not to.

You can use 7zip to compress in .zip but I don't know if it will work for the above.

It's not sure that people have 7-zip though.

7-zip can do .zip but ist still limited to the 32kb Dictionary size otherwise it would not be compatible with any other zip program.
the enhanced (lazy?) parsing in 7-zip does make a bit smaller .zip file than most, but ist still not able to find redundancy outside of the 32kb window.

Just for the heck of 7-zip making a .zip file in ultra mode is still 1.5GB
.zip is just not a good format for big data

1.5 is less then half the original size so whats the issue with that?

I didn't say there was an issue. Explainig the reason you did option A does not mean you are against Option B.
But it's against the purpose to increase the download time to nearly twice, it simply not optimal.

true, i thought the idea was to make sure people were confident in using a .zip and that was why you would want to use it.

Would using 7z's self extracting .exe with .dat files work for scanning? Literally the method SE uses for their files?

I provided a link for the compression/decompression tool earlier, If someone wanted to decompress without running the .exe file.

Indeed the above online installer from S.E. does use 7-zip as the compression format.
However that just to temporarily extracting the real install files that are in some obscure .cab format.
If they have used 7-zip for the real install files I would have been able to update them easily

Indeed. It's been awhile since I've done a fresh install but it's worth to note for people that the only things they need to have checked are "Playonline" and "Final Fantasy XI" the rest of the things install with the updates. At least according to SE.

Thx Jet, You're always posting the things I'm already thinking, and giving me a smile.

I'm still giggling from the other days' "gaming laptop" thread.

I recently did a re-install on a win10 box. I was able to copy/paste over from my old folder with minimal issues and the update took under 2 hours after that. SE broke all my map dats as usual. However that was easily remedied afterwards with another copy/paste.

They always update things like this on "dying" games.

Just teasing those that claim this game is dying all the time. In all seriousness though, I wonder how long FFXI would have lasted if it wasn't part of the numbered FF series. Anyhoo, this is a long overdue step.

Anyone with awesome internet tried downloading the new installer package from POL? Curious if it's worth reposting an updated torrent on my seedbox.

...My home 'net is merely DSL, so I'd be looking at a considerable amount of time to get everything downloaded and re-uploaded to the seedbox (which has a lovely 250mbit connection which works great for others to download from. XD)

@Nyarlko

Just tested the download speed, the speed of the download was going at 60 MB/s (not bits) using Google Chrome, and an NVME SSD +
1 gigabit down. It's pretty fast as is I would say.

That's actually pretty darn impressive. O_o;; I don't ever remember it being anywhere near that fast... I guess they upgraded the toaster that they run the download server. XD

I think they upgraded from a Potato to a toaster

But .7z can handle it. Just I'm trying to determine if it's 2003 again.

Previous downloaded install was 7.zip so kinda wonder why they changed,
7zip seems to be a much better fit for this purpose
