Okay.. I reformatted my PC recently (viruses n stuff)
Reinstalled FFXI.. but when I hit play I get booted and get the following Error message:
"Terminated as an error occurred in Final Fantasy XI. Failed to initialize Direct3D"
Any suggestions?
I checked device manager & I'm missing 2 drivers - SM Bus Controller & Video Controller (VGA compatible) - I'm assuming this may have something to do with it but dunno where to get them from :(
Thanks.

Sounds like you pretty much have no video drivers atm. If you know what video card you have, just download the drivers from the vendors site. If you have a pre built computer, video drivers should be somewhere on the reinstall cd/partition.

I had this problem with another game, even though I had my video card drivers freshly installed, they just stopped working 2 days later, I uninstalled and reinstalled them and everything was fine.

Go to run
Then type DXdiag
Click display and Screenshot it or copy the info under 'Device'
In fact Screenshot the entire panel :)

Isn't there an option to install DirectX on the POL install cd?

I had this problem as well, I just changed the screen resolution from full screen to a smaller size, and it worked. Not sure if this is a good fix, but its a temporary solution at least. :E

Okay, finally SOME progress!
I've determined my Video card is an ATI.. What sort.. I do not know >.<
Aside from dxdiag / device manager .. Does anyone know of any other way I would be able to determine which exactly it is? short of opening up the case and looking in there I dunno another way and thats really a last resort (Dont really have the strength to get it from where it is to somewhere I could do it >.< )

Can go into the setup and see at startup I believe.
Like, F2 it when you first turn it on.

Have you checked the device manager? Maybe that will tell you.

Not enough info there. You have an ATI card, but what model, etc. There's 9x, 8x, 7x, HD, etc. and so on. Also need to know what OS (windows 7, windows vista, windows xp) and what version it is (32-bit or 64-bit). Sounds daunting, but if you have it, look at the original manual for the PC. This should give you all the info you need.

That is sort of my question.. I have an ATI card.. but cannot determine which. dxdiag doesn't acknowledge it's existance & because drivers are missing it shows as Video Controller in device manager & not as display adapter. Was asking if we know of another to to find out :)
As for original manual for PC.. I've no idea where that is. The mother is like a void for anything remotely important.

Sadly, about the only way to find out would be taking the computer apart and looking for the model on the card itself. Generally manufacturers will have a sticker somewhere on it that will identify its model. Thats really the only way to find out at this point.

Yeah.. I'm keeping that in mind as a last resort, as I say.. I dont really have the strength to move the PC! - I do.. But it'll be an effort and I'd like to try avoid it.

I assume your PC is not a custom built PC. So get your manufacturer, model, serial # or service ID, and look it up on the manufacturer site. You should get a complete spec sheet on your system, and usually a list of drivers to download. If not , you can at least google the model# and locate some more information on your system. Also now that you know the video card is from ATI, that at least narrows down your search.

It will list all physical devices all windows devices anything. at least try before you open your computer up -_-
Hasn't been updated since 2004, so may not work with newer hardware, and its only for 32-bit systems, so if they are using 64-bit architecture, won't help there either. They are already irritated enough, as stated, probably best to just let them pull it apart. It'll take maybe 5 minutes tops.
